Philippines to upgrade 'world's worst' airport

The Philippines announced Tuesday a facelift for Manila's main international airport after it was ranked the world's worst, but conceded the renovations could not work miracles.

Transport Secretary Manuel Roxas said the 1.1 billion-peso ($25 million) revamp of Manila airport's Terminal 1, which caters for most international flights, would start in January next year and was expected to take 18 months.

"This airport was designed 30 years ago... the wear and tear is taking its toll," Roxas told reporters as he announced the renovation plans.

He said the upgrade would aim to cut immigration, customs and baggage waiting times for passengers, while improving basic amenities such as toilets.

However Roxas stressed the repair was a stop-gap measure.

"We're doing what we can... we will never be able to bring it back to its condition 30 years ago, when it was new," he said.

He said fixing the problem required building a new airport at the former US air force base of Clark, about an hour's drive from the capital, but that this would not happen for at least five years.

The government announced its intention to revamp the old airport last month immediately after an online budget travel guide, www.sleepinginairports.net, named it the world's worst.

Citing reviews from its readers, the website said the airport was given the dubious title following complaints of thieving staff, dirty toilets and a collapsing ceiling.

the government said it needs at least18 months to fix a few toilet seats and a falling ceiling and Mr. Roxas said it takes 5 years to build a new airpoty is the big joke I have ever heard! that is why the philippines is always behind than its neighbors. it is too slow to respond the economic and social needs. that is why few FDI come to invest in the philippines. Too much corrupted officials and government redtape makes foreign investment too difficult to overcome. China builds its own airport within less than 2 years!

Sir Manual Roxas you have to bite the bullet on this. Stop spending any more money on this antique. Pati mga immigration officers antique na rin. Wala silang respeto sa mga pasahero. Nag kukuwentuhan habang may pina-process na pasahero. Sila kaya muna ang i-refurbish ninyo.

Build a new airport outside Metro Manila Sir. You must have noticed in your travel to other countries Sir that most, especially new, airports are outside of the city to allow future expansion Sir.

But make sure sir that if you pick a place the Congress and Senate must pass a law not to allow commercial and residential developement within a defined distance to the airport property unless relevent to the airport operation and passengers.

At makikinabang pa kami. Okay ba Sir?

What happened to NAIA Terminal 3? Has it become a hopeless irredeemable failure? A long enduring ruin and painful remainder of its corrupted past?

This is the gateway to the Philippines... This thing should be built from ground up tapos palitan lahat ng employees ng mga kagaya nung mga barista na nagtratrabaho sa Starbucks para pleasant kausap!

The airport facilities need to be upgraded not just simply renovating it to its state 30 yrs ago.. 1.1B fund is enough if it will be used properly. And also change the management, it will give a better impact.

masyado akong manghusga at nilalahat sila??? NARANASAN KO KASI FIRST HAND ANG MGA KATARANTADUHAN NILA sa NAIA...

It's high time for the Philippines (our country) to move forward and correct a lot of the WORST issues being labelled on its name and improve the country's image while in the process of doing so. We have to admit the realities as they knock on our doors and welcome such comments for they are meant to improve our country, if we take it all the the right way and challenged us to move forward. Among these are:
      1) Worst Airport (it's true and i've passed through it a hundred times already))
      2) Worst country to make business with (it's true due several government regulations that
      needs to be streamlined)
      3) Worst in urban planning ( the overwhelming proliferation of urban squatters and shanty
towns that overshadowed the good areas of the country's capital, Manila. It had
created a bad image to the whole country.
      4) Worst in corruption related issues ( a true reality that had existed for a long time)
      5) Worst in "traffic management" of all it's major thoroughfares.
      6) Etc.......
