About 1,000 employees protested over government plans to raise electricity and gas prices. Under an aid deal led by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the European Commission, Romania has pledged to deregulate its energy markets in stages for both households and industry until 2017 for the electricity sector and 2018 for gas. More than 8 million Romanians and some industrial consumers pay energy prices set by state regulator ANRE, which are capped below market levels.
