    Flickr user shares rare EDSA snaps

    Flickr user Bong Manayon says: These photos were taken around Greenhills, outside Club Filipino, just before Cory Aquino was inaugurated as President on Tuesday, February 25, 1986. When the events of 1986 unfolded, I was proverbially locked in by prayer meetings (I'm protestant) and a father (who was a Marcos loyalist) who did not want us to join any of the mass actions. Monday (24th), I was able to sneak out with my brother, Noel Manayon, to join the crowd between Crame and Aguinaldo; he took most of the photos on that day climbing up on one of those electric light post in the middle of EDSA while was at ground level. On Tuesday morning, we went to Greenhills for Cory Aquino's inauguration. I found myself in front of the heroes of EDSA 1986 as they marched into Club Filipino.

      Mas kampante ako sa panahon ni Marcos, panatag ang loob ko sa pagpasok sa paaralan at pag-uwi sa bahay dahil alam mong walang may mangyayari sa 'yong masama. Di tulad ngayon, maglakad ka lang, sumakay sa jeep, lalo na sa taxi, doble ingat ka baka ikaw ay masaksak, ma-biktima ng snatching, ma-hold-up, o kaya kung ikaw ay nasa sarili mong sasakyan, baka ikaw ay ma-carnap! Sa panahon ni Marcos, may price control para sa proteks'yon ng mamayang Pilipino laban sa mapagsamantalang negosyante. May kaagarang solusyon sa mga problema, tulad ng tagtuyo sa kabukiran na naranasan noong 70's, ang patubig o irigasyon ng NIA. Mga kaliwa't kanang inprastraktura. Utak aktibista at may ambisyong politikal lang ang magsasabing di maganda ang panahon ni Pres. Marcos.

        Graciano, Hindi mo seguro maalaala na ng umupo si Marcos magandanda ang economiya natin. Self supporting tayo sa bigas. Second tayo sa Japan as developing country in Asia. Pero nang umalis siya iniwan niyang bangkarote ang Bansa at next tayo sa Bangladesh sa kahirapan. Kaya huwag mo namang sabihin na mas maganda noong kapanahunan ni Marcos. Kaya ngayon mag-ingat tayo kasi baka bjumalik tayo doon at maging masahol pa lalo pa kung wala masyadong alam sa pamamalakad ang ating Presidente at nagdedepende lang sa emosyon. Magmatyag tayong lahat.

      Cory promises to give “land to the tiller”

      Cory Aquino officially announced her candidacy on December 3, 1985. Land reform was one of the pillars of her campaign.

      On January 6, 1986, Aquino delivered the first policy speech of her campaign in Makati and said, “We are determined to implement a genuine land reform program . . . to enable [beneficiaries] to become self-reliant and prosperous farmers.”

        Ten days later, on January 16, 1986, Aquino delivered her second major speech in Davao and said, “Land-to-the-tiller must become a reality, instead of an empty slogan.”

        In the same speech, Aquino also said, “You will probably ask me: Will I also apply it to my family’s Hacienda Luisita? My answer is yes.”

        This campaign promise would haunt her for many years to come. To this day, it haunts her son.

      Para kay Juan de la cruz ang EDSA 1&2 walang saysay o ala-alaahin pa! ito'y isang sakuna o bagyong dumaan lang na hangang ngayon sinasariwa pa ng mga opportunistang nakikinabang hangang sa kasalukuyang nanunungkulan sa ating governo sila'y ang nakikinabang sa pag-buwis ng buhay n juan de la cruz na umaasa ng kaginawaan sa buhay ngunit ang inaasahan nahantong sa bangungot sa mga kamay nang magnanakaw (mga buwetre! na naghihintay ng patay) marami iyan sa hanay ng ating governo ngayon mga opportunistang kawani...magingat baka kayo maawaan!

        I beg to disagree. Yung Edsa I may saysay, yung so-called EDSA dos ang walang kwenta, Mrs. Aquino's participation not withstanding. Kung mayroon mang aral na mapupulot sa ikalawang pangyayari ay yung tiyak na kapahamakan ang idinudulot ng walang paggalang sa kagustuhan ng nakararami.

      EDSA 1 failed because Cory became president. If Cory gave up her presidency for Doy Laurel after EDSA 1 it would be a lot different. I'm just wondering, why didn't Cory gave up her presidency knowing that she cannot run a country without any experience in politics? why didn't she just gave the presidency to someone who could run the country well.

      The people who spearheaded the so-called EDSA Revolution were those who were jealous to Gen. Favian Ver which became the right hand of dictator Marcos leaving Enrile and Ramos behind. That was the time that this two went on the side of the people and began their moves to topple dictator Marcos. That's the truth. They are not heroes of the revolution. They go on the side of the people for their own safety.
