President Benigno S. Aquino III congratulates newly sworn Supreme Court (SC) Chief Justice Maria Lourdes Punzalan Aranal-Sereno during the oathtaking ceremony at the Rizal Hall, Malacañan Palace on Saturday (Aug. 25). Sereno is the 24th Chief Justice of the High Tribunal and the first woman to assume the post. She earned an Economics degree at the Ateneo de Manila University and a Bachelor of Laws degree at the University of the Philippines. She was President Aquino’s first appointee to the SC and the youngest to be appointed and may also be one of the longest-serving justices with her mandatory retirement on 2030.
