Senate President Juan Ponce Enrile also commanded attention this year for protecting Senate's legal integrity against lawmakers and private lawyers who tried using the impeachment court for publicity. Despite guiding senators towards organized impeachment proceedings until May, Enrile continued to face several rehashed attempts to oust him as the highest Senate official since September. Enrile, who was called a revisionist for allegedly rewriting history to suit his own purposes in his book late in September, also drew flak for defending Senator Vicente 'Tito' Sotto III against his critics. But while Enrile, who aided Sotto against critics as 'ignorant of the Philippine Constitution,' the Senate president verbally assaulted neophyte Senator Antonio 'Sonny' Trillanes IV.
