    Pinay model raises alarm on identity theft

    The Philippines – home to the fifth "most engaged social networking audience" and the sixth largest Facebook population in the world — is also one of the many countries without a law to protect its netizens from online identity theft.

    Identity theft occurs when someone uses your personal information without your permission, to commit fraud or other crimes. That is how the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas described identity theft, warning the public regarding online financial transactions as early as July 2009.

    To date, the Philippines has no law that penalizes people guilty of identity theft. Most reports of identity theft in the country happen not only in social networking sites, but in banking sites as well.

    GMA News reporter Julius Segovia said on Jessica Soho’s “State of the Nation" that ten Filipinos daily fall victim to identity theft, especially in the National Capital Region.



    Victims of identity theft

    Twenty-one year old model, entrepreneur, and blogger Kryz Uy was one of the many victims of identity theft. An anonymous user set-up a fake Kryz Uy account to sell clothes, purportedly from her; up to P8,000 was stolen from one of Uy’s followers.

    "Everyone thought that I was scamming these people so I had to clear my name. But then no matter how I tried to report it on Facebook, wala pa rin," said Uy. She went as far as reporting the incident to authorities, but to no avail.

    In 2010, Gilbert Climaco, a program director and news anchor of the Radio Mindanao Network, was a victim of identity theft after a fake Facebook account under his name was used to extort money. Climaco, who back then did not yet have an account in any social networking site, said that the fake account "created a lot of mess in my life."

    One bank depositor, who refused to reveal his identity, lost P87,000 when an unknown cyber-thief succeeded in transferring money from his account to an untraceable account. “Masama lang ang loob ko kasi walang magawa ang bangko," he said.

    Anti-identity theft legislation

    In 2008 alone in the United States, despite having several statutes in place to protect citizens from the crime, over 10 million people fell victim to credit card identity theft.

    A law protecting internet users from internet-related forgery and fraud is now in the works in the Philippine Congress. If House Bill 4115 or the Data Privacy Act of 2011, is passed, it will "ensure that the personal information and communications system in the government and in the private sectors are secure and protected," according to the House of Representatives website. The bill is on its third and final reading.

    While the bill is awaiting final approval from the House of Representatives, authorities urge Filipinos to be extra vigilant, especially when it comes to their automated teller machine transactions and even with their social networking site accounts. — MRT/VS, GMA News

      I have a pre-paid Smart Cell Phone. And when I load it, it keeps on stealing from me. It automatically deducts from availments I never had or applied for. Like Ring tunes, etc. I availed of their unlimited call "promo" "6400" for P100, that will be good for 5 days. They say you should maintain a balance of one(P1.) peso. I did. In fact I usually maintain a lot more than that so I can text who I need to text for the week. The problem here is Smart just keeps on stealing my excess load! Then I ask several people who uses the same thing and they said they kept on experiencing the same. And they are a lot. And when Senator Enrile complained in the halls of the Senate that he was stolen from his cell phone too. Five (5) Hundred Pesos that he never used. That was the time when I got this idea that this company is engage in mass looting! Yes mass looting! Imagine if say P15 pesos is deducted from a cell phone owner say in one day. For something he never availed of. Multiply that by 30Million subscribers. This company raked in P450M in a single operation! And nobody is running after them! Who are on the take in goverment? I don't know. But your guess is as good as mine. At facebook, unscrupulous people can steal your datas and sometimes your image for their own evil designs. Two of my facebook friends were victims. They sent me a message that in truth they never did. In separate messages, they informed me they where stranded in some far away places. The first one lost his personal belongings in England and the other one in some country in Europe. Both were asking me to send them money to be able to go home. It turn out to be a hoax. There is another story where somebody's image was stolen and splice it to create an embarassing movements done by the victim, and sent to the victims facebook friends. The idea is to destroy the person. In a failed society as we have, we have no protection whatsoever from our very own government. Especially from institutional mass looters like Smart, the oil cartel, power cartel, water utilities cartel, etc. as well as
      criminal elements!

        AMEN TO THIS!!! This happened a lot to me! I think Senator Miriam Santiago experienced the same problem years ago. Smart would send me things that I did not ask for when my load get low and in a few moments, I no longer have load! I've switched to Globe many years ago and I can say they don't do that (they will let you know thru their text if they charged you any). I do not know about Sun.

        Looks like "Smart" should actually call themselves "SLY".

        Every time I read a story like this, I became more worried going back to my beloved country with my partner. We're planning to live in the Philippines for the rest of our lives, buy a new house and car (afraid that it will be carnapped if it's a new one). Now, we're looking for some alternatives and spend our money somewhere else.

      Para makaiwas sa cyber fraud at identity theft, eto tips ko...

      1. IWASAN ang internet shopping dahil hindi mo nakikita ang ka-transaction mo, ang quality at existence ng produktong dapat i-deliver sa iyo...Pumunta ka na lang sa mga department stores na actual mong makukuha at masusuri ang product na binibili mo upon payment sa magandang kahera, mapa-credit card, debit card, cash or ATM card man ang type of payment na gusto mo.

      2. LOST CARDS, basta importante at may kinalaman sa pera, i-report mo na agad at gawan ng affidavit of loss...Mahirap na, baka maisahan ka....

      3. RECONCILE BANK accounts mo, i check mo dahil kung minsan may mga kaduda-dudang maliliit na halaga na ibinawas sa account mo kahit PISO o 2-PISO lang yan....Alamin mo rin kung magkano ba ang transaction charges for using bank facilities other than your own bank....Pag-sobra ang naka-debit memo sa account mo, i-reklamo mo...

      Sa hirap ng buhay ngayon tandaan mo lang... ang maliliit na halagang yan na mawawala sa iyo ay malaki kung naiipon...O may tips ba kayo para maiwasan kahit papaano ang cyber fraud.??..Share nyo naman...!!...

        May I also add na huwag ilalagay sa mga social networking sites tulad ngfacebook, twitter, friendster,etc. ang inyong birthdate, employer, at ang inyong address dahil madaling makukuha ang mga records ninyo gamit itong 3 important information. Para wag mabiktima ng identity theft, wag ninyong i-post ang mga naturang impormasyon.

        Also, whenever you receive freebies from your network, like free ringtones, ring back, or free wallpapers and the like, do not accept it, cancel it right away. Most of them are subscription that will automatically charge you after the free one. It so hard to cancel them. When you call the customer service, they will just tell you that you are already unsubscribe but then they will charge you again.

        Use an electronic e-card from BPI and request for a lower credit limit. In case of fraudulent transactions, which you will never recover , you do not compromise your whole credit line. Internet purchases is 90% risky. Suggest you put a cap on what you are going to loose every time you make online transactions.

      WAKE UP PHILIPPINES........ cyber crimes are committed all around use and our government doesn't do anything as they are on the take as well with the taxes they take in. The crooks love it as they can get away with it....who is going to stop them. The #1 crook has to be the cell phone companies.
      SMART and GLOBE.......The customer goes and loads his/her cp and before he can even get off a text or call, he/she is deducted for 'ring tones' from '234'...so you try to call *888 and either can't get thru or on hold for 45 minutes so you say F...it and leave it....THAT'S WHAT THEY WANT......
      But should you be lucky enough to get thru that pleasant agent say "Sir you must have subscribed to the ring tone".....oh who runs 234? "oh that an contract provider who you can't contact them except thru 234" ...so you kiss that money away........
      So you go back to the store and load p100 to your cell in which to enroll in one of the many plans. Great all is loaded you have a balance of P5 and SNAFU ...somehow SMART DEDUCTS the load....all the load.....
      O H !!!! ok I will just call and ask what happened to the load......OH you can't call as you don't have a load.....so you have buy another load and round and around it goes.
      Now that nice voice say "we will take a report and get back to you shortly" All those who have any money back from SMART FOR AN ERROR IN THEIR SYSTEM please raise your right hand........oh no one.....
      When you purchase a load from a retailer...do they give you a receipt from SMART or GLOBE as required for certain amounts purchased...so how does BIR know they are collecting the right amount of taxes....OH...your suppose to believe what SMART or GLOBE files.......
      Does NTC do anything to help the customer?? They want to see the proof that we bought the load and that it was truly lost. Cyber crimes comes with many different faces and in different places so beware///

        Since 1999 na ho itong isyung ito till now wala pa ring gingawa ang authorities. I know kelangan ang cellphone ng bawat isa. Pero kung ikaw ay isa sa nagrereklamo i-minimize mo ang paggamit nito. nabuhay kami nung dekada 80-90's wala namang cellphones nun pero we had survive till now. I ama rapid texter din since early 2000's pero never had an experience like this. be wiser...be smart, globally, sun will shine brighter...Cyber crime is anywhere. Turuan nyo rin ang mga anak-anak nyo on how to prevent it. Who knows baka mga anak natin isa rin sa mga nagnanakaw ng identities nila or sa family natin mismo..

        i agree too.. nan----ari skin yan sasabihin ng customer service na MAM CAN YOU HOLD FOR A WHILE GAGAWAN KO PO NG REPORT so ako naman naghintay almost 45 minutes wlang nan----ari nakbalik at nakabalik nko d2 sa bansa kung saan ako naka base wla pa ring nan----ari,, hayz nku thats pilipino style hirap sa pinas lahat puro panloloko panlalamang sa kapwa katakot na nga at nkakahiya kc ang mga foreigner pag nalaman na pinoy ka kibit balikat lng sila, sbi nila friendly ang pinoy oo don kc sila naguumpisa sa pagiging friendly then later on aabusuhin kna nila

      Sometimes its the fault of the victims because everyone should be more cautious. Don't be easy targets! As for the celphone companies..not just smart...globe too...they've made a killing jacking people's load. Problem is that now with the money they've made they've become untouchable. I have yet to see people in power (or with influence and money) ever brought to justice. Exposed..yes..convicted...NEVER.

      It's true that online crime is now a treat to everbody. Likewise, I received several e-mails on my account telling that they have a million of dollars to be taken out of there country, particularly in Seanegal and some other areas around the world, They kept telling stories that it is deposited in the bank and they need some beneficiaries with huge amount of money as your share. If you trust these people and you have given your true identiy, true bank account number, with contact number, correct passport number, then you are now a victim of these cybercrime. Beware.... I just discover this thing lately and I was almost tempted to their offer...

      BE AWARE EVERYONE. Always play it safe. If a friend of yours asked some amount of money through your email or FB or whatsoever, it's better to give him/her a call or meet them up and verify...just to be sure.

      Online shoppers/Online sellers --- be prepared, because this is the risk in shopping or selling online.

      i also experience this problem with this so called no 1 wireless network (smart communication ) ilang beses na rin ao nagreklamo sa customer service nila, imagine kahit d ka nag subscribe sa mga promos nila they keep on deducting sa load mo, buti na nga lang nahinto na pag bawas nila kasi d na ko nag load ng higher amount sa account ko, and talaga di ko sila tinigilag sa pagtawag ko sa customer service nila

      we have the same predicament with smart..as well as globe networks. I have pre-paid sims both. last year my load was deducted due to services which I have not even requested. In short ...several times repetitions. What I did is call the hot line I told the operator that my load was stolen due to service like Ring Back tone...imagine?? P5 & P7.50 was deducted every day...
      I threatened them to stop taking my load without my request or else i will file a complaint with NTC, DTI & the Senate. The y did stop until now. We call it UNSOLICITED SERVICE REQUEST.
      Maybe we will inform Senate President Juan Ponce Enrile about this...since its was investigated in the Senate before where the network officers promised not to implement.

      Maybe we will form a group of cellphone users to be strong to file class suit against these arrogant networks.

      Do not accept online offers. It is their marketing strated----...wether it is on moblie phones, internet sites, minimize online shoppings. Sintido kumon lang mga kababayan... matalino ang pinoy. Kaya mismong pinoy din ang nakakagoyo sa kapwa nya pinoy.
