MANILA, Philippines - Pope Benedict XVI has appointed Most Rev. Giussepe Pinto as his representative to the Philippines.
As Apostolic nuncio, he will act as the permanent diplomatic representative of the Holy See.
The appointment was announced at 12:00 noon in Rome (6:00 Manila time).
A native of Bari, Italy, Archbishop Pinto was born on May 26, 1952. He was ordained as a priest on April 1, 1978.
CBCP News said Pinto entered the Diplomatic Service of the Holy See on May 1, 1984 and has served successively in Papua New Guinea, Argentina and the Secretariat of State in Vatican City.
He also became Apostolic nuncio of Senegal, Cape Verde, Mali and Guinea-Bissau, and has been assigned as Apostolic Delegate to Mauritania. Before his appointment to the Philippines, he was envoy to Chile.
He is 16th in the line of Apostolic Delegates and Apostolic nuncios to the Philippines, replacing former envoy Archbishop Edward Joseph Adams.
