    Powerful quake rocks Taiwan

A shallow 5.9-magnitude earthquake sent people fleeing onto the streets in Taiwan's second-largest city Kaohsiung and rail services were temporarily suspended, but no casualties were reported.

The quake struck 57 kilometres (35 miles) east of the southern city at 10:34 am (0234 GMT) on Sunday at a depth of just four kilometres, the US Geological Survey said.

The Hong Kong Observatory measured the quake at magnitude 6.0, while Taiwan's Seismology Centre put the magnitude at 6.1.

The National Fire Agency said there were no casualties or major material damage.

"A few Kaohsiung residents sought safety in the streets for a short while, but it wasn't many," a Kaohsiung police officer told AFP.

Chen Jung-yu, a spokesman for the Seismology Centre, said it was relatively rare for an earthquake of such magnitude to hit in the Kaohsiung area.

"While the quake was strong, it didn't last long. Even in some towns near the epicentre, buildings swayed for no more than seven seconds. That explained why it did not inflict damages," he told AFP.

A high-speed railway linking Kaohsiung with Taiwan's capital Taipei in the north resumed about 90 minutes after the quake prompted services to be suspended.

The greater metropolitan area of Kaohsiung has a population of nearly three million people.

Taiwan is regularly hit by earthquakes as the island lies near the junction of two tectonic plates.

In September 1999, a 7.6-magnitude tremor killed around 2,400 people in the deadliest natural disaster in the island's recent history.

Singapore will get hits One Day but it's not the quake that wipe us out but the Flood.
Just look around Singapore, we are surrounded by "Water" all around us and the Heavy piling and digging everyday, not only damaging the environment and also the stability of the earth.

No matter how advance the Technologies now, just one word from Mother Earth ... and Sayonara to everyone in Singapore and the first peoples to vanish are those under "Reclaim Lands".

I think if there are calamities to happen in Singapore, it will be the sinking of the island.
Like you say too much piling digging and with so much more loading from additional buildings, infrastructure and facilities,

There is always a limit & breaking point of everything, that is nature.
It is only when this limit will arrive.

Don't forget the heavyweight residents of SG -- good eat, good sleep; every day meat, meat, meat, sweat little little. Can do household chores or walk to marketing, they don't want. Employ maids and drive the car. Then fat fat, people laugh. They spend $$$ to join swanky gyms. If stress, they eat eat eat or smoke smoke smoke, then body metabolism no good, so get fat fat fat again. Lagi worse, fat fat women wear kitty heels or high heels! They walk like hammering the ground.

Alamak, our ground how can tahan this kind of torture? So many people on so little land. More and more fat people -- both young and old. Then dig dig underground for carparks, MRT stations and tracks, shopping malls, etc. Build buildings tall tall. How can SG not be sinking?

With no earthquake, parts are already falling off on their own. If there is an earthquake here, it will not be just parts falling off, the whole track will fall off, disintegrate, and become powder !
