The historic impeachment trial of Chief Justice Renato Corona will be a test of the chief magistrate’s character and moral fitness to lead the Supreme Court (SC), the House prosecution team said Monday. During his opening statement at the Senate trial, lead prosecutor Niel Tupas Jr. said the 23 senator-judges should ultimately look at Corona’s character in deciding the outcome of the impeachment case. “Pagkatao po ang pinag-uusapan natin dito… The prosecution will show that Corona is the crowning glory of a cast of accomplices of former President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo,” Tupas said before the impeachment court. Tupas also called Corona a “loyal servant” of Mrs. Arroyo, who appointed him to as high court chief magistrate. He pointed out how Corona once served as the former President’s chief of staff, spokesperson and executive secretary. He likewise said that the House impeached Corona as a part of its mandate to hold high-ranking public officials accountable for their actions. “This impeachment is the verdict of the House of Representatives. We took the first step towards the fulfillment of our oath to be the keeper of the trust of the people,” he said. A total of 188 lawmakers agreed last month to impeach Corona for betrayal of public trust, culpable violation of the Constitution and graft and corruption. Thirteen more congressmen expressed on Sunday their intention to support the impeachment case against the chief justice. — RSJ, GMA News
