MANILA, Philippines - Even as the prosecutors of the impeachment trial of Chief Justice Renato Corona get the flak from some senator-judges, they still respect their opinion but at the same time reminded the senator-judges that they have a sworn in duty to be partial and make an appropriate judgement at the end of the trial.
Rep. Romero Quimbo said this in reaction to Sen. Miriam Defensor Santiago's statement that based on her assessment, the defense panel is leading as far as performance in the trial is concerned.
"Like what we have been saying, we always respect the senators opinion. While they were always reminding us of our shortcomings and lapses, we also would like to remind them (senators) that they also vowed to be fair in their verdict come judgement time," Quimbo, one of the prosecution's spokespersons, said in his statement.
Rep. Quimbo also said they do not forget the fact that this trial of Corona is a political process and senators as judges when they make their the decision will not explain the basis of their judgement.
"This is how political process is and we accept it. They even do not need to say what evidence they used in rendering their verdict, Quimbo reiterated.
Quimbo, however, said it is too early to say the outcome of the trial saying the time to make a decision or render a judgement is not now. The time to do that is at the end of the trial and I hope that much as we are always advised to do certain things, I think we are also free to remind the senator-judges to also put their judgement based on their vow to be partial.
Asked what his reaction is if Corona is acquitted, Rep. Quimbo readily said they are ready to accept whatever is the decision of the impeachment court. But also tossed the same question, "is the Defense ready to accept if Corona is convicted?"
The impeachment trial is now entering its second month and out of eight articles of impeachment, the prosecution is still not finished in the third article, which is about the alleged partiality of the Chief Justice in the controversial issuance of the temporary restraining order (TRO) against the travel ban on former President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo and her husband former First Gentleman Jose Miguel Arroyo.
The prosecution earlier said they have about 100 witnesses to be presented in the eight articles of impeachment but it seemed this would not happen at all as they plan to trim it down to only three or four articles of impeachment to speed up the trial.
But on whether the prosecution will finish the eight articles of impeachment remains to be seen as Senate and even the Palace wanted to end the trial before the Lenten break on March 23.
