Large asteroid nears Earth for rare flyby

A big asteroid is set to make its closest flyby of Earth in 200 years on Tuesday, but there is no chance of a crash landing when it zips past our planet, NASA said.

Astronomers have aimed their telescopes to catch a glimpse of the 2005 YU55 asteroid, which is about as big as an aircraft carrier but will not be visible to the naked eye, when it passes at 6:28 pm (2328 GMT).

"Frankly, for anybody this is going to be really hard to see. This is 100 times more dim than what the human eye can see. You need a good telescope," said NASA spokeswoman Veronica McGregor.

The near-spherical, 1,300-feet (400-meter) in diameter asteroid often travels in the vicinity of Earth, Mars and Venus, but "the 2011 encounter with Earth is the closest it has come for at least the last 200 years," the US space agency said.

Other asteroids of this size pass by Earth frequently, though the last such event happened in 1976 and the next will not happen again until 2028 when an asteroid called 2001 WN5 will skim about halfway between the Moon and Earth.

This asteroid is expected to pass a bit further away; about .85 times the distance of the Moon to the Earth, or a distance of 202,000 miles (325,000 kilometers) from the center of the Earth.

The space rock's closest pass will be off the Pacific Coast of Central America, southwest of Guatemala City, as it travels in a northwesterly direction, according to McGregor.

Skywatchers should be equipped with a telescope that has a minimum aperture of six to eight inches (15-20 centimeters), experts said.

"2005 YU55 is one of the potentially hazardous asteroids that make close approaches from time to time because their orbits either approach or intersect the orbit of the Earth," said Robert McMillan, an associate research scientist at the University of Arizona.

McMillan discovered the asteroid in 2005 as part of the university's Spacewatch Project, a solar-system-scanning group of scientists near Tucson, Arizona.

However, astronomers know from analyzing the trajectory of the asteroid that it will not hit Earth this time.

The asteroid's next closest pass is set to take place in 2094, at a distance of 167,000 miles (269,000 kilometers), according to forecasts.

"The observations will give us a piece of the puzzle, one we don't get many chances to see," said Don Yeomans of NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory.

"At one time, we thought these were the asteroids that delivered carbon and other elements to the early Earth, so they are pretty important."

NASA said radar observations from the Arecibo Planetary Radar Facility in Puerto Rico have already begun as the asteroid closes in.

Astronomers at the Clay Center Observatory in Brookline, Massachusetts, are training their 25-inch (64-centimeter) telescope to track the asteroid and capture images of it.

NASA's Deep Space Network antenna in Goldstone, California grabbed radar images of the asteroid looking like a large gray egg, which were posted on the NASA website late Monday.

While the charcoal-colored asteroid's visit has scientists excited for the chance to get a closer look, most Earthlings probably will not notice a thing.

"The gravitational influence of the asteroid will have no detectable effect on Earth, including tides and tectonic plates," NASA said.

I hope they get enough data out of this study, i.e. the mineral composition of the asteroid, the velocity, trajectory/pathway, etc.

This is important because, if the situation wherein an asteroid would hit our planet arises, we would already be armed with the knowledge and (hopefully) the technology to address this perceived threat.

On the side, we may get additional information (should there be anything new) about the composition of the materials that are in outer space, shedding more light on the issues and questions that are hounding us regarding the cosmos, the relation of these findings to the formation of our planet (and of the other planets for that matter), the origin of life on Earth, etc. The data that can be gathered from this may be meager (I'm not an astrophysicist/astronomer so I can't really say what they can find there), but it may potentially prove or disprove existing scientific theories altogether.

In essence, this phenomenon and subsequent study are important as we have another chance at eliminating another block from the "god of the gaps" mindset that most religious people cling to when faced with scientific issues.

I have to ask, though... is this fly-by visible from our night sky tomorrow night? Would it occur during our daytime or would it pass on our side of the planet in general?

"In essence, this phenomenon and subsequent study are important as we have another chance at eliminating another block from the "god of the gaps" mindset that most religious people cling to when faced with scientific issues."

        - Well, in terms of 'god of the gaps', science is only useful to the religious to the extent that it is practical for them in the natural world (which is governed by natural laws) and, to the extent that as long as it does not contradict their religious beliefs, this can, and does, on more occasions than you'll find them admitting, save their hides from mortal harm.

It's no mystery that most religious fanatics, when stricken by illness, will make a beeline to the hospital as opposed to running off to church or pulling out their prayer beads.

Ironically enough, they often take to prayer while at the hospital and, when the fine doctors and hard-earned solutions provided by science saves their sorry asses, they then are able to credit their prayers to a "miracle."

Anyway, I like how such people are basically pointing out "gaps" in the current scientific theories but offer no credible, verifiable solution of their own other than "God did it."

Obviously, I think rationale like this will ultimately be organized religion's undoing in the long run.

I just realized....Would they really tell us if its actually going to hit earth?
      • Ibang Klase Ka Talaga 6 months ago
once they have determined that it would be a direct hit and the the size would be enough to destroy us or the planet upon impact or eventually destroy the balance of our ecosystem, meaning no human/plant/animal life would survive, they'd rather not tell anybody, simple reason is we'd rather don't have panic from all over, that would be my guess, we hear about these things because it doesn't affect us.

consider this also, it is likely that one potentially life threatening will hit this planet, most probably not in our lifetime, nor several generations forward as it did in the past, it will not be visible to us until we can't do anything about it beyond assessing the damage it can do to us. our current technology, the governments level of interests to fund for setting up observatories will not be enough to scan the vastness of space for the asteroids which can potentially hit this planet. in other words, there is also a certain percentage that an asteroid will hit us unforeseen.

        if you worry, just don't.

Should the NASA agency and the other space agencies like Japan, Russia and the European space agency should do there best to break this down into piece by piece as what the movie Armageddon done in the movie, they should think the situation of the people will be in danger hence that the asteroid YU55 still hanging through forwarding into the Earth. As soon as early as that, they should do to break this massive object as an easy way.

"I believe that when I die I shall rot, and nothing of my ego
will survive. I am not young and I love life. But I should
scorn to shiver with terror at the thought of annihilation.
Happiness is nonetheless true happiness because it must
come to an end, nor do thought and love lose their value
because they are not everlasting. Many a man has borne
himself proudly on the scaffold; surely the same pride
should teach us to think truly about man's place in the
world. Even if the open windows of science at first make
us shiver after the cosy indoor warmth of traditional
humanizing myths, in the end the fresh air brings
vigour, and the great spaces have a splendour of their
      own."

“The idea that God is an oversized white male with a flowing beard, who sits in the sky and tallies the fall of every sparrow is ludicrous. But if by 'God,' one means the set of physical laws that govern the universe, then clearly there is such a God. This God is emotionally unsatisfying... it does not make much sense to pray to the law of gravity.”
