Google says disagrees with EU antitrust opinion

BRUSSELS (Reuters) - Google said on Monday that it disagreed with the opinion of EU antitrust regulators who said it may have abused its dominant position, but said it was willing to discuss issues further to resolve the matter. Earlier on Monday, EU Competition Commissioner Joaquin Almunia offered Google, which provides the world's most popular search engine, the chance to offer concessions to settle an antitrust investigation. "We disagree with the conclusions but we're happy to discuss any concerns they might have," Google spokesman Al Verney said in a statement. ...

Reuters

OPINION: The changing tide in Tibet

Beijing (The Star/ann) - No matter what the Dalai Lama or Tibetans in exile say about Tibet, it has transformed from a feudal society and closed economy into a modern and open society which is no longer influenced by religion.

Asia News Network

OPINION: Pokhara perils

Kathmandu (The Kathmandu Post/ANN) - Pokhara's geo-physical formation provides a unique scenic beauty. At the same time, it is also a source of vulnerability to various natural disasters. The clear view of the Himalayas, especially Annapurna, at a relatively close range has been possible because of an abrupt rise of a mountain in the north and absence of a mountain in between the valley and the Himalayan range. This abrupt rise of the mountain is also a cause of various slope failures leading to landslides and their other consequences. ...

Asia News Network

OPINION: We can't turn tail and run

Manila (Philippine Daily Inquirer/ANN) - If countries were people with their heights determined by land area and their weights determined by population, China would certainly be a Goliath to the Philippines' David-except that the physical differences between the two would be much, much greater than those of their biblical counterparts. ...

Asia News Network

OPINION: What it means to say 'vagina'

Kathmandu (The Kathmandu Post/ANN) - In the midst of various Nepalis fighting for rights and struggling for equality, it's no surprise that much effort is being poured into human rights and alongside it, women's rights. While these initiatives that spread across the country and range from grassroots programmes, to art exhibitions, and even travelling theatre productions are appreciated, most do not realise that a campaign's name may say a lot more than what the title suggests. When trying to bring change, it is crucial to remember how something is said may play a large role in the outcome.

Asia News Network

'Phl needs international opinion on shoal'

The Philippine government should seek an “international opinion” stating that the Panatag (Scarborough) Shoal standoff must be settled through an international court, former defense secretary Avelino Cruz Jr. said yesterday.

Philstar

OPINION: Indonesia-US economic ties likely to grow

Jakarta (The Jakarta Post/ANN) - With the US economy showing clearer signs of recovery, Indonesia's Ambassador to the US, Dino Patti Djalal, one of the most trusted aides of President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, says targets to double bilateral trade value in five years and increased US investment in Indonesia are both very likely scenarios. In a conversation in Washington with The Jakarta Post's Linda Yulisman, he elaborated his optimism and highlighted existing challenges to achieving the targets.

Asia News Network

OPINION: The 'good' drones

Islamabad (Dawn/ANN) - The pine-topped lush landscape of Seattle, Washington, with its hills and rain-soaked greenery could not be more different from the craggy, burnished plains of Pakistan's Federally Administered Tribal Areas.

Asia News Network

Opinion vs CJ not evidence - lawyers

Lawyers of Chief Justice Renato Corona claimed yesterday that the public’s opinion is not evidence as they downplayed the results of the latest Social Weather Stations (SWS) survey.

Philstar

OPINION: Pakistan's security threats

Islamabad (Dawn/ANN) - Externilasiation of threats remains a core flaw in Pakistan's internal security approach. The security establishment, policymakers and opinion-makers and most of society badly suffer from this fallacy, which merely affords them an escape from responsibility but no cure for the menace that haunts Pakistan.

Asia News Network

Korean food gets 'C' in test of public opinion

Seoul (The Korea Herald/ANN) - Korean food has been graded "C" among international cuisine, despite the government's efforts to promote its cuisine worldwide, according to the Ministry for Food, Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries on Sunday.

Asia News Network

OPINION: A centenary of Bollywood

New Delhi (The Star/ANN) - Indian cinema turned 100 years old last week. And what a journey it has been! A country riven by sharp differences of religion, caste, ethnicity and language discovered that it could laugh and weep together watching films produced by Bollywood. Such was the pull of films that over a short period, India became the largest producer of films in the world, leaving Hollywood far behind.

Asia News Network

OPINION: Ah, for that nice cuppa in the good old kopitiam

Kuala Lumpur (The Star/ANN) - I grew up drinking coffee like plain water. Kopi-O was served from morning till late at night in my home in Penang. And the best coffee was the one we bought from the nearby kopitiam.

Asia News Network

OPINION: The 'realpolitik' of size

Manila (Philippine Daily Inquirer/ANN) - You don't pick a fight with someone bigger than you. But if you must defend yourself, you need to find an ally as big as he is, or get the backing of other small entities that may feel similarly threatened. Such support has its own costs. It may mean giving up certain things in return, or going against some cherished ideals. That is what realpolitik is about. It may seek cover behind principles, but, in essence, it is political conduct based on a clear calculation of long-term interests and a sober recognition of the pragmatics of power. ...

Asia News Network

OPINION: Forgetting martial law

Manila (Philippine Daily Inquirer/ANN) - How soon will it be before we forget the national nightmare that began on Sept. 21, 1972, and ended sometime in February 1986? Not too long, I'm afraid, and that's truly worrisome. That is why the families of martial law victims have launched a national campaign, called #RememberML@40!, to make us remember the 40th anniversary of the start of the Marcos dictatorship.

Asia News Network
