Santiago warns Aquino of the perils of 'desire'

The feisty Senator is now a love guru.

Senator Miriam Defensor Santiago, known for her intelligence and wit, has an unsolicited love advice for President Benigno "Noynoy" Aquino III who stood as the Best Man in her wedding anniversary.

"According to the Dalai Lama, desire is the source of all misery and unhappiness in life. So if he is going to look for a mate, he might desire her, then he would become unhappy. I would have to consult the Dalai Lama," Santiago said.

Aquino has admitted dating Korean born, TV host Grace Lee, who seems to be liking the President's attention.

Lee, 28, even described Aquino, who just turned 52 in Feb. 8, as a “very sweet and very considerate” suitor.

While warning Aquino of the effects of "desire," Santiago said she only wants the best for Aquino. She noted she wants him to be happy if he chooses to settle down, to avoid a life of "misery."

“Of course we all want him to be happy, so I hope that he makes a good choice if he is choosing – at his age he should be choosing – his possible potential mate,” Santiago added.

“Unless he is resolved to be a bachelor forever, I will advise him that it is a life of complete misery. Everyone needs a partner in life, so let's wish him good luck in his search,” she said.

Aside from his love life, the senator also wished Aquino’s presidency well.

“I hope that the spirits of his parents, who did well for our country, will continue to guide him and that he will always be conscious of their high expectations – perhaps too high expectations – because it's so difficult to be a president,” Santiago said.

There are 2 kinds of desires. The evil desire and the good desire. Only the evil desire can bring misery while blessings for the good desire. If PNoy is truly in love and desire a future family, then it is a good desire and the fulfillment of God's commandment. If he wants to take advantage only of the woman then it is evil desire and will bring misery. Sincere prayers can bring good result.

I have just one advise to the President:

Don't get married just because you need a partner. Get married because you love the woman and you are ready to make sacrifices for the good of your marriage. Listen to Senator Miriam but never marry someone like her.

di na gets ng marami ang punto ni miriam, himayin natin; desire? pinaganda lang, sa tagalog pagnanasa. kung hindi kasi love ang pinagmulan kundi pagnanasa, malamang magkaproblema sa huli ang relasyon nyo.

Life of misery kung walang asawa? "it's better to love and lost than never love at all" Kasi mas mabuti pang ma try mo mag-asawa at makipaghiwalay kaysa habang buhay ka nag-iisip; "papano kaya ang buhay may asawa?"

I find nothing wrong with PNoy still single at his age. I know single folks who are happier than married folks.

You know what is abnormal? People who started a family, yet cannot support their kids growing up. The deadbeat dads, the parents who abuse their children, etc. those are the abnormal types.
      • Doræmon 3 months ago
db ang abnormal yung hindi kaparehas ng karamihan? pano kung ang karamihan yung mga anak ng anak at asawa ng asawa? diba sila na yung normal? natanong q lng . . . (single / no child /19 yrs old/ student) pra lng mkapang troll lol :D
      • glenn 3 months ago
lets define first normal and abnormal then what is norm?.
      • pipo 3 months ago
abnormal means above normal meaning they are more superior than normal.

bdw I idolize Pnoy for being single. Pero Abnoy sa politics hehe..

History-wise, women were the causes of the fall of great men.... But Noynoy is not great... So OK lang... :p And if I were to put the words of the great lady senator to their logical extreme, it would mean: "Wag kang masyadong malibog..." XD

According to the Dalai Lama, "desire is the source of all misery and unhappiness in life...... ". well now that explains it. I have never seen a more combative, angry, unpleasant and unhappy person before than Miriam Santiago,,,I'd have to guess she's still reeling over her failed presidential bid,,,, if the shoe fits, wear it!

Only in the Philippines !!!!!!!! Santiago, mind your own business.

Sen. Miriam Defensor Santiago can give advises on this matter based on her own experiences. The senator is a wife and a mother more than being a lawyer.

Miriam said that being single is a life of misery. I am wondering where she got that mentality !!! There's NO guarantee that being married could end up having a happy life without misery. Many marriages, especially in the Philippines, are broken and ends up into separation. Many Pilipino men are NOT satisfied with one woman ,but they have mistresses and children on the side. At times the wife ended up with a bunch of kids without the help from the their father. The wife becomes miserable in raising the children. I think there's pros and cons for being single or married. If you don't want responsibility, please DO NOT get married !!! Save your money and enjoy your life to the fullest.

Living one's life as a single isn't necessarily miserable, it just depends on how you'll handle things that comes you way. It's good to have a partner that's for sure. In the Philippines, not all married couples are happy. Social, financial, moral and/or religious views and the like play huge role in the happiness of married couples. Again, it's all about how one handles the situation.

PNoy should give up looking for a girl while he's still the President of the Philippines. PNoy can't just juggle love life, governing, and politics because it's not good. PNoy, you should devote your time to governing and improving the Philippines. I know and hope you didn't become president just to search for that potential partner, heck you should not even be doing that while you're president.
