Singaporean woman gets radical surgery from Taiwan doctor

Taipei (The China Post/ANN) - A Singaporean woman recently received a pioneering surgical treatment at the Taipei Medical University Hospital (TMUH) where 22 uterine fibroids were removed from her body, three of which were measured to be over nine centimeters in diameter. Joined by her husband, who was also all smiles and appreciation, the lady expressed her gratitude at a press conference here.

"You who are in Taiwan are very lucky," the couple said, "to be covered by health insurance and have doctors with such extended skills like none anywhere else."

Leslie and Gene Tan, age 62 and 43, received the life-changing news of Gene having multiple large uterine fibroids during a routine physical examination in 2007. Although uterine fibroids are benign and are commonly seen in middle-aged women, the Tans were still devastated, as they were informed that hysterectomy - removing the uterus - is the preferred treatment, but they wanted children.

Before the couple arrived in Taiwan for consultation with Liu Wei-ming of the TMUH, they spent two years visiting revered physicians in Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, the United Kingdom, and the United States, where the same suggestion of hysterectomy was repeatedly yielded.

As director of the TMUH Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Liu is a pioneer in removal of uterine fibroids combined with bilateral uterine artery occlusion, a surgical treatment for uterine fibroids that involves only minimally invasive procedures. Ms. Tan underwent the surgery, where she bled only a little, thanks to the successful uterine artery occlusion, on July 6, and had fully recovered Wednesday.

She was in shock knowing that 22 uterine fibroids were removed from her body. While the biggest fibroids were between 9 and 10 centimeters in diameter and were "as large as mangos," as the couple described the tissues, "the smallest ones were merely pea-sized."

Mr. Tan commended the TMHU medical gynecologic team for supporting them during their decision to undergo surgery and the process of going through such difficult times. As a car dealer who has traveled the world and has experience receiving health care, Mr. Tan said: "The quality of international health care services at TMUH, in its medical professionals, equipment and overall service, has achieved the highest world standards."

That her wish of retaining her uterus for the future possibility of having children has been realized, Ms. Tan said with a broad smile, "As a woman, it is really lucky for me to have met such a good doctor." Mr. Tan echoed his wife and expressed appreciation for Liu's respect for "the sanctity of life" as well as his understanding for their desire to have children, in addition to Liu's non-comparable surgical skills.

"He did whatever he could to protect it," so Mr. Tan described Liu's faith in the sanctity of life. "And we thank him for that."

How do you feel about this article?

Sometimes I don't really have any faith in Singapore doctors, myself as well as many of my friends cannot get child and when we went to see a ----nae, the common answer we got was: Go do IUI, failed, do IVF.....!!! That's all!!! And according to my own experience, most of the ----nae in the hospital has no time to really consult and talk to us, very rush when go to their consultation. Hope our hospital can improve on this.

@Clanceroy I totally agree with you. My own experience i went thru so many cycles of ivf and wasted alot of money becoz they really not sincere to help. They are only out to make as much money from you as possible for each cycle. Its sad that one will only find out when you are already doing it halfway. I also feel we lack behind state of the art skills in this area. Or is it becoz by not improving, pple hv to try and try and pay and pay?

agreed with you guys as i've dealt with local hospitals and out of 10 doctors only 1 is good, the rest are all money face and are indifferent to patient's sufferings, all they wanted is $$$ , nothing but $$$, they will ask you to go for surgery/operation on every little things, the worst thing is after all the $$$ and sufferings, your problem is still not resolved!!!

Being a woman, i can fully understand her strong desire of being able to have her own child. Age is not a problem. With the help of modern technologies, matured couples are able to realize their dreams of having their own children. I wish them all the best luck

THANK GOD For medical Science advances and the HEART to save (long term thinking) rather than giving in to the convenience of just cutting everything out (short term solution). It rings of NEW hope for many patients with similar conditions.

THAT is the difference between SINGAPOREAN doctors and the more advance medical centers around the world. The attitude towards LIFE and Creation: To each his own. Let's pray for a speedy recovery and fulfilment of dreams.

I just wonder how much they paid for it. Is it cheaper than Singapore?
    • Nezha 3rd prince  •  10 months ago
I bet it is much, much ,cheaper than in sg .Just go to the hospital here for observation ,for 2 days and see how much the bill is ,i tell u ,if you are not prepared you might get a heart attack
      • VIP 10 months ago
You are right. The bill here esp in private hosp is scary. You might get cured and then die of an heart attack upon representation of the bill.
      • Chris 10 months ago
I believe so. I was in a govt hospital for 4D3N. My bill was $3K and I was in C Ward.
Shocking men! 1 day 1k!!! But to be fair, 50% was subsidised 50% insurance & medisave. I pay no cash. Ah but then..........

Singaporeans are proud of the financial system and medical system here. It is indeed top of the world. But face the reality about who really benefit from it? I mean the expensive medical and so called "advanced" do benefit whom? I doubt that. In Taiwan, the medical system is almost free for everyone lives there. Talking about the financial system, another blood suck machine here. It does profit a lot. But I don't get the points of why Singaporeans are so proud of them.

its not free.. all working adults in taiwan pays this healthcare insurance from their salary . No matter if you do visit the doctor or NOT.
      • Gentlebutmanly 10 months ago
its free becos the taiwanese paid upfront even when they are not using it.

In Singapore, you have money you may live, if you have no money, you will die.
Sometime, even you have money, you also must die, cos even after your die, the docter will still ask your family for money. it's all about PROFIT. Everything here is Singapore is all about $$$$$.
How to be 1st Class like this?
      • Gentlebutmanly 10 months ago
its the same, and this is happening everywhere around the world. if you think you are staying in a poor living condition, take a look at those in africa. You are consider fortunate

Hard to accept the description "pioneering surgical treatment" when procedure in various forms is done all over the world, although not exactly as described. Without knowing the facts it would seem that the advice given by the majority of doctors may be the right one,

It is their own 'bowl of bee hoon'. Too hot or not, too spicy or not, is not for us to comment. They never ask for donations , so they must be reasonably well to do, and therefore reasonably intelligent. So, why worry.

How many times have you visited the doctor before you get to meet the experience one? Or have you paid a lump sum of money to get the experienced Singaporean doctor?

Well, it's true to say young doctors need to get experience to improve themselves. But, why are we suppose to pay such a high fee as the experience one to get the inexperience doctor who failed to detect your illness? For my case, I had a very young doctor who failed to detect any of my illnesses and prescribe some medicine that is not related to my condition for at least 3 times visit. Why do we pay the high fee for such incapable doctor? The experienced doctor took just one glance and he got what is affecting me. 3 times and he couldn't find it.

      First world? I doubt so.

Frank, thats other people's life, dont be so mean.
Anyway, we only know what is reported, maybe there is other struggles and circumstances in between?

Singapore's doctor is money oriented especially in private hospital. However, I believe there are passionate ones as well. You just have to look for them and I know there is one in government hospital actually.
My mother was diagnosed with Glioblastoma Multiforme and doctor who performed surgery only took a sample out. The surgery last for an hour+, next day already chased me for the fee. Granted, it is incurable disease but a doctor must do whatever they could to save life of the patient. Not just simply confirm that is incurable currently then give up.
When my mom was terribly sick, I visited another doctor. He was confused why previous doctor did not remove the cancer cell at all. Her life chance would be 6 months to 2 years if her tumor was removed as much as possible. In another 2 years, who knows what might happen? Medical breakthrough for example? However, my mother RIP in four months after her tumor sample was taken out. I'm pissed really but cannot do anything.

Check out it out and those with experience paying for loved ones health care, Singapore specialists (may not be typically blue blooded Singaporeans per se) are gold diggers. The govt is trying to mkt Spore as the region's medical hub but alot of practitioners here are bringing shame to the profession by assuming it is her/his rights to rip patients to the bones! Doctors who are guilty of that, be mindful of your retribution. Of course there are genuine doctors who knows that theirs is a special vocation to ease people of pain, save lives, then $ is only the next consideration.

Well ... I am a taiwanese but have been living in SG for couple of years. My opinion is that both SG and TW have better medical care than those i receive abroad in Europe. I need to pay 20 dollar a month ( 400 NT dollar ) in taiwan for medical insurance. rich or poor must pay this 20 dollar in order for government subsidies. I went through two similar operations in my life , both are minor operations. One of them i had it in Taiwan and it was about 1000 dollars. Another one I had in SGH was about 4000 ( no subsidies for me as i am non PR or Citizen ). for both operations I am happy with the services I received. Was force to pay more because i had to live in a A class Ward, T.T

It is somewhat a little late for the wife to conceive. 43 years old right? Money is not everything, the body has its limits, even the latest technolo---- does not guarantee a baby. Why would a woman wish to wait till she is 43 to try for baby? (Maybe she has own reasons?)

Many women nowadays mistakenly believe that technolo---- will allow conception no matter a woman's age. That belief is quite mistaken. Celine Dion was very very lucky. Not so lucky was Sarah Brightman. The truth is, once woman is past the age of 30, chances are reduced, not impossible but reduced, also depends on your body conditions. Please be realistic, sometimes you cannot fight against the forces of Nature. Of course many cases of conception between 30 and 40, but once past 40? Past 40 is very difficult, not impossible, but very difficult.

Many women because of career or other consideration, will put off conception till it is too late, believing technolo---- will help. If you truly want baby, then plan early. Of course that holds for men too, once too old also much reduced chance, so be realistic. If eventually no children, then just acceptance, you have no choice, that's life.

Many women in Singapore try for baby past age of 35, then get disappointed when Singapore hospitals cannot help even with medical technolo----. Please don't place all blame on doctors, you cannot fight against mother nature, that's all. Note that the statistics work strongly against you, even younger women sometimes cannot conceive, what more an older woman?

That said, wishing good fortune to those who want a baby. It is strong desire to want child, and can understand feeling of disappointment. Best wishes! Hope you can get what you deserve and want with all your heart! Sometimes miracles can happen.
