Toyota official sees 2012 Philippine car sales growing 7%

The Philippine car industry will recover this year with sales increasing by 7 percent to 177,000 units from 165,000 in 2011, Rommel Gutierrez, Chamber of Automotive Manufacturers of the Philippines president, told GMA News Online.

Gutierrez, also corporate affairs vice president of Toyota Motor Philippines Corporation (TMP), on Wednesday said the industry expects a stable supply of vehicles, both completely knocked down and completely built units.

New models of all types of vehicles will also be introduced, Gutierrez noted.

“Some of the sales are carry-over from last year — customers who ordered last year but had to wait for their vehicles this year,” he said.

Last year, domestic sales fell 4 percent to 144,600 units because of disasters that hit Japan and Thailand, where most vehicle parts come from.

With this positive mood, TMP Foundation, Gawad Kalinga, and Sta. Rosa City launched on Wednesday the Gawad Kalinga Village project in barangays Pulong Sta. Cruz and Malitlit.

TMP foundations P20-million donation will build 158 houses on an 8,000-sqm property. It will benefit hundreds of families in slums near the TMP Sta. Rosa plant.

Starting next month, construction will start in 5,000-smq of the property and a park, school, and community and multipurpose centers will be built on 3,000-sqm. The project will be completed next year.

“The donation is Toyota's way of giving back to the community,” said TMP president Michinobu Sugata. “We help people living in areas where we operate.”

“Our employees, dealers and suppliers will help build the houses,” he added.

TMP sold 54,593 vehicles last year, accounting for 38.55 percent market share in the Philippines. — VS, GMA News

There are people who works hard to make a living, and they are and will probably be one of those who will purchase and purchased these cars.

After all, Forex is a vast business, and it is for those who had the determination and the guts to independently earn for a living.

I do sure hope you'd understand what I mean.

I doubt Hyundai/Kias going to top that one. Ever since the 2008 recession they along with Ford, GM and Fiat/Chrysler have gone upmarket offering better quality products than what Japan has to offer.

The new Hyundai Accents and Kia Rios are better off than being used in Taxis especially the new Rio. Quite a hot compact that thing. Sooner or later, they'll stop supply the country with old economy cars and will be new selling more upmarket ones for the not so rich elites to buy.

the biggest question in this projection is that even if this sounds like good news because this segment of economy is picking up, this is more bad news on traffic, pollution, etc etc.

Without figures showing how we rate in keeping "non-roadworthy" vehicles away from the streets versus new car registration, we won't be able to control pollution levels which we know is so terrible in this metro.

hmmm... Prius are popular here in Madrid. But my cousin tells me that you can rarely see Hybrids in Ph. Maybe they should start selling Prius' to conserve gas and its even environmentally friendly.

There seems to be a much stronger brand loyalty to Toyota here in the Philippines as I've seen more Toyota than any other brand.

We had to choose between a Toyota Camry, Honda Accord or Hyundai Sonata. We chose the Hyundai in pearl white fully loaded but I have to admit that even tho the Sonata's quality is top notch, it sure cannot surpass the reliability figures of Toyota (we used to own a 1999 Camry).

The Toyota Fortuner seems to be the norm for upper class citizens especially the local politicians. Why is it?

177k units is considered low compared to Toyota's sales in the 90's, so this 7% is just pasikat. the truth is, in the vehicle industry, Hyundai, Nissan Chevrolet Subaru Mitsubishi are eating a huge sum of toyota's potential earnings. Even Mercedes is moving in establishing more showrooms, Dodge, Jeep, Mini, Lamborghini(very soon) is also slowly but surely moving in the market too.
