    Training Teachers On Sign Language

MANILA, Philippines - To upgrade teachers' competence in teaching learners with a hearing impairment, the Department of Education (DepEd) will hold a series of training programs on sign language across the country.

Education Secretary Armin Luistro said the training is in line with DepEd's "thrust to make education truly inclusive of all learners especially those who have difficulty understanding lessons due to hearing impairment."

Luistro said the training program is organized by DepEd's Special Education Division and the Bureau of Elementary Education in coordination with LINK Center for the Deaf and in partnership with the Boeing Global Corporate Citizenship.

The training seminar for Luzon will be on May 15 to 24, 2012 at Teachers' Camp in Baguio City and will be attended by selected public school teachers from Regions 1, 2, 3, 4-A (CALABARZON), 4-B (MIMAROPA), 5, and Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR).

The seminar for the Visayas will be on April 15 to 24 at DepEd Ecotech Center in Lahug, Cebu City to be participated in by public school teachers from Regions 6, 7 and 8.

The Mindanao leg will be in DepEd RELC in Cagayan de Oro City on April 25 to May 4 where public school teachers from Regions 9, 10, 11, 12 and CARAGA are set to take part.

"We intend to strengthen teachers' skills in the teaching of sign language in preparation for the inclusion of pupils with hearing impairment in regular school," Luistro said. "It is our duty as educators to provide equal opportunities to children and youth with special needs so that they can lead productive lives," he added.

Luistro said the program is composed of sign language training and seminars in Special Education (SPED) as well as formal sign language evaluation in the basic and intermediate levels by the Philippine Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (PRID). It is also meant to provide teachers with competencies in establishing and maintaining SPED programs.

Expected to participate in the second phase of the training are teachers who attended the first phase of the seminar last year. Attending the first phase of the training is a new batch of 15 new teachers per region.

Rather than say they are Hearing Impaired, it is better to call them Deaf.

IT’S ECONOMICS DEPED!!!!!!!YOU SEEM TO BE BLIND ABOUT THE REALITY. The REASON there are so many SCHOOL DROP-OUTS is because the STUDENTS’ PARENTS CANNOT AFFORD SCHOOL REQUIREMENTS FOR EXPENSES FOR PROJECTS like a computer print of a human body for example. E WALA NA NGANG PAMASAHE OR PANGMERIENDA ANG STUDENT hingan mo pa siya GUMASTOS for the use of a computer and a computer printout????BAKIT DI NA LANG MAGPAGAWA ANG SCHOOL NG 1 BIG COPY nito per class!!

Look at the QUALITY OF STUDENTS PRODUCED BY PUBLIC SCHOOLS. Di nyo ba naisip why a lot of graduates are POORLY-EDUCATED??? KASI D TEACHERS…INSTEAD OF DEDICATING THEIR FULL TIME TO TEACHING they ARE ALSO VENDORS IN SCHOOLS???KASI THEIR SALARIES ARE LOW!!!

So DEPED the SOLUTION IS NOT ADDING 2 GRADE LEVELS but IMPROVING THE STANDARDS OF EDUCATION IN PUBLIC SCHOOLS. PUBLIC SCHOOLS STANDARDS OF EDUCATION SO MANY MANY YEARS BACK WERE BETTER THAN PRIVATE SCHOOLS!!!!!! How come they can’t be done at present????

DADAGDAGAN PA NG SIGN LANGUAGE TRAINING???? HINDI NGA MAKAYA MA-IMPROVE YUNG QUALITY NG TEACHING NILA…ANO BA YAN?????

The article did not specify that ALL teachers shall take the training!! The Department of Education allotted a specific number for this in order for the PUBLIC SCHOOLS to address the needs of those who are considered exceptional!

ALL teachers? ano ang proof mo?

Hearing Impaired students has special needs. Maawa naman kayo sa mga bata pati na sa mga teachers. Eh, isang classroom nga mahigit 70 yung estudyante. Papano ba yon? Hindi ba pepwedeng kukuha talaga nang teacher na SpEd Major?
    • lance  •  Manila, National Capital Region  •  3 months ago
ang problema sa education lalo na sa education courses, may mga major pa pero at the end kpg ng-apply na sa school, ibang subject naman ang itinuturo, imbes na kabisado na ng teacher ang ituturo nya dhl 4years nyang minaster un ay magbaback to zero. malamang hnd mgkakarun ng quality education dhl both teacher and student ay parehong ngccmula pa lng matutunan ang ibang bagay. saka mahirap mgng teacher, hindi mo n nga major ung ituturo mo, iba't iba pang subject at marami pang estudyante. imagine 60 student in one section sa classroom at hnd mo major ang tinuturo mo? taz pagkatapos ng isang klase, another batch of 60 student at iba n nmn ang subject. bago magdagdag ng ituturo, sana maayos muna ung sistema, at the end, teacher ang nhhrapan taz kpg hnd naituro ng maige, sisisihin ng lht ang teacher dhl hnd mgling mgturo, in the 1st place kaya nga ngkaron ng MAJOR dhl lam mong dun ka magaling at mggng bihasa at mggwa mong maituro ng tama. alalahanin naman ntn na TAO pa din ang isang guro na sana'y wag maabuso at may kakayahan ding mapagod. after all, a parent and a teacher should help each other regarding sa bata. kung may major ng math, math nlng ituro nila, kung tle, tle dn, kung science, science at dhl may sped major, sped. kpg naayos yan, for sure may mgbabago sa edukasyon.

Bakit ngayon lang nila nakita na Teachers needed to learn that. Teacher din ako pero, nag kusa akong nag aral ng sign language kase I will surely need it someday and surely enough it also became a plus point sa work ko abroad. Lahat ng kailangan ng Teachers to advance their Profession they MUST learn it at hindi lang Teachers even other professions too need to learn new technique.

Sign language is taught in english. How can teachers teach sign language when they don't know correct english in the first place?
    • Jack  •  3 months ago

i wonder if this particular project been done in consultation with the Deaf community and DPOs that represents the majority within the Deaf community.. 'nothing about us, without us"

The idea of the Department of Education, in partnership with LINK and other organization can be considered as a way of addressing the need of having skilled mentors in the field. Let us not be immersed to the negative thoughts and just focus on the great moves that the department is doing. We have to remember, its a process, yes we want to achieve the principle of inclusion, and it will be done not in a single snap of the fingers.... Kaya dun sa batikos ng batikos, tumahimik na lang po sana, at ang mas magandang gawin eh ipagdasal ang maayos na pagpapanukala ng progmra.. un lang po... bow....

good! i hope it will now make education for all , must easier . also comunicating with deaf using sign will become more universally acceptable to the hearing world and encourage more people to learn sign in shopping malls , emergency services , places of entertaiment .

It's a good start but how fast enough can sign language be learned to the level of teaching with it? There is reason for sending special children to special schools that focus on their needs. Good if finally they can integrate special and regular education, but another critical matter to focus on is the quality of teaches we produce. With or without sign language, children will receive the kind of instruction their teachers have.

please, spare the freaking teachers! have they not been through a lot lately? last time i checked, there was a separate room and teachers for the hearing impaired/deaf mute? have you heard of the word S.P.E.D?
    • Nino ricky  •  Manila, National Capital Region  •  3 months ago
Just a suggetions to Dep Ed. Kindly make a training modules and do the training per region so that they are trained properly. I also recommends that SPED Teachers and SPED Supervisors in public school around the regions should be align to their course because as what i know there are SPED teachers in public school that are not SPED majors same with thier supervisors. I would like also to emphasize that training programs will not only focus on deaf but all exeptionalities, especially ADHD and autism.
