DUBAI: Telecom operator Du yesterday confirmed that its internet users in the UAE are suffering from slow speeds during peak times and service disruptions.
The virtual chaos came after an undersea cable between Dubai and Oman was cut earlier in the week.
Du confirmed the news in a statement, which said: “We are issuing this statement in order to alert our customers to a possible degradation of Internet services as a result of an international submarine cable cut that took place at 7.45am, 21 February: due to the undersea FLAG cable cut between Dubai and Oman.”
It has not been made clear how many users will be affected. Du warned of slowness during peak times.
“Although the incident is not under our control, we are working with the parties concerned to ensure a quick resolution of this issue,” Du said.
“According to cable operators, the repair process has already started and performance is expected to go back to normal levels within the a few days.
“We apologise for any inconvenience caused and we are committed to providing further updates and actions being taken to restore capacity performance to the normal levels.”
Meanwhile, Etisalat, the UAE's other telecoms operator, said that its users will not face any disruptions.
