US student quits over 'appalling' Japan rant

A US student whose "appalling" anti-Asian and anti-Japanese rant went viral on YouTube announced she was quitting college, after receiving death threats.

The University of California in Los Angeles (UCLA) undergraduate said the video had led to "the harassment of my family ... death threats and being ostracized from an entire community.

"Accordingly, for personal safety reasons, I have chosen to no longer attend classes at UCLA," added the student, in her third year studying political science, in a letter to campus newspaper The Daily Bruin.

In the YouTube clip she lashed out at the "hordes of Asian people" at UCLA. Speaking in a fake Asian language -- "Ohhhh. Ching chong ling long ting tong" -- she chastised them notably for talking on their cellphones in the library.

"In America, we do not talk on our cell phones in the library," she said in the three-minute clip, adding: "If you're gonna come to UCLA, then use American manners."

She continued: "I swear they're going through their whole families, just checking on everybody from the tsunami thing. I mean, I know, that sounds horrible. I feel sorry for all the people affected by the tsunami.

"But if you're going to go call your address book, like you might as well go outside, because, if something is wrong, you might really freak out and you're in the libary, and everybody's quiet.

UCLA chancellor Gene Block condemned the comments earlier in the week as "appalling" and said the video did not represent the views of the university community.

In her letter to the Daily Bruin Friday, the student said she was "trying to produce a humorous YouTube video," but instead "offended the UCLA community and the entire Asian culture."

"I am truly sorry for the hurtful words I said and the pain it caused to anyone who watched the video," she wrote.

"Especially in the wake of the ongoing disaster in Japan, I would do anything to take back my insensitive words. I could write apology letters all day and night, but I know they wouldn't erase the video from your memory."

How do you feel about this article?

she made a major error. Threatening her family, having to quit...sounds rather extreme. I guess forgiveness is not in some peoples vocabulary.

The american manners?? what is that?? specially now where every word that comes out of their mouths are four letter words?? i don't think they have the right to preach about manners.

I am a Filipino, an Asian to be considered and It saddens me to think that she was irresponsible with the rage of emotions she had with a few minutes of "breaking of silence" in their campus library. I will never forget when 9/11 bombing hit America, we offered not only a few minutes of silence and prayers but daily mases for the American people which lasted for months as a sign of our empathy with them. Don't get me wrong here, I'm not saying I'm obliging her to do the same. In fact, I'm not even sure if she knows that, and telling her before is not necessary. All I'm saying is that, if only the Japanese student was given the chance for a few minutes of consideration for to think of his/her loved-ones back home, will surely be grateful for a lifetime to the entire UCLA community. A small gesture of care and consideration is a noble act of humility. God bless everyone.

This "girl" is a typical American and talking about what many, but not all, American think. Most of them believe without them nothing will go on. They think they are subs of God on earth and they handle like they think. And that especially in the Asian areas. I hope Filipinos will think about why American forces landed in the Philippines. When you ask them (he Filipinos) the answer mostly is: they have wanted free the Philippines from Japanese occupation. No, the wayfrom the Philippines to Japan was shorter than from any other place in the Pacific area. Freeing the Philippines was a side effect. Good for the Philippiners.
Who throw the first neclear bomb. The American. And where? In Asia.
What is the result of the Korean war? Korea is devided. Who fought there. The great Nation and they were not able to create an united Korea.
They fought in Vietnam, lost and ran home but destroyed flora and fauna incl. Human Beeings with defoliant
They also fought in Mindanao and and the result maybe the intensification of the conflict between Mindanoa population.
      So far Americans in Asia.
But there is also the Middle East
That Sadam Hussein, Hitler, and some other dictators must be called in the same breath is undisputable. To eliminate Hussein was one side of the coin. But was the deployment of thisamount of forces nessecary? Or are there other majoritarian interests in the background than to bring democraty to the Irak? Eventually economical Interests? Is there peace now? NO
There is an other country in Middle East.
      Afghanistan.
The Russian gave up because the American supported Usama ibn Muhammad ibn Awad ibn Ladin (Osama bin Ladin). Now they fight him because he has different visions of democraty then Americans have. But now they show more cleverness. Not to be the only force in Afghanistan they took other forces on board but under their leadership.
I hope they do the same the Russia did.
Nevertheless a minority of Americans are Human Beeings like you and me knowing that the majority is hard headed. This minority should protelysize their fellow Americans and tell that all people in this world the same if white, yellow, black, or brown, or what ever skin color as well as the American First Nation People in their reservation (concentration camps)

Man...you should go back to the beginning of your "educational process". Granted that in the Library, as in many other places, we should respect other's rights to study and keep quiet...but Asians are not the only ones using the cellphones there I'm sure! Or is it just the Asians you're irritated with? Second, if it's an emergency...something as big as what happened in Japan or other similar incidents, then be more sensitive! Third, your immitation of the Chinese language was so insulting...and Chinese/Japanese are NOT the only Asian countries...there are a lot...but then, maybe knowing them all would be a stretch for your cognitive functions! And if you were really focused on studying, you would not hear every single noise around you...so, obviously you were having great difficulty studying...and to have an EPIPHANY? Could you spell that?
And, why even bother about what happens to your neighbors? I thought you were going to complain about rowdy behavior and partying, etc.!?! You're obviously just jealous that their families are close and take care of them...don't know about your family...So they cook, clean, and do their laundry for them...haven't seen any of those actions leading to their "young" becoming criminals or threats to the society! And, if they get to be dependent on their parents...SO WHAT??? They probably have more money anyway than you can count!
American culture is not the only culture in the whole world, you know! Go travel outside Southern California and open your eyes...see the world...learn! You're obvioiusly in the wrong course! And, if you plan to be a lawyer...well, invest in a very good insurance policy or prepare to go broke! Your mouth will get you there! Stop with the labelling...a lot could (and has been said about you, if you want to talk about stereotyping and discrimination)...even your own race would be ashamed of your actions! The power of the speech is so great...so be responsible and THINK first before you open your mouth. Now, if that's too hard to do, then keep your mouth shut. I'm all for freedom of speec...fine...just be ready for the consequences. Which is what you got (although the death threats were a little bit too much).

Some people dislike others not because they hate them for who they are or for what they do...They dislike others because they hate themselves for they are not capable of doing what other people can!

Moral lesson: RACIST COMMENTS SHOULD BE KEPT TO YOURSELF.
Unless you want millions of people from the internet wanting to claim your life. Serves that @#$% right.

Racism is man's gravest threat to man - the maximum of hatred for a minimum of reason!!!!

She certainly picked an impeccable time to make that joke. Think twice before you make a joke about a disaster. I know she learned her lesson. Let's just hope others will learn from this also.

American Manners?? I wonder what would that be?
    • RAMIL  •  11 months ago
Words reflect attitude. Words can hurt feelings and destroy relationships. More
people have been hurt by an improper choice of words than by any natural disaster.
Choose what you say rather than say what you choose. That is the difference between
wisdom and foolishness. A fool speaks without thinking; a wise man thinks before speaking.

You do not teach proper manners by employing bad manners yourself.

Well, what I can say is " Its hard to face a Problem if the Problem is your Face!" This Girl seems to belong to the same circle as Floyd Gayweather Jr., and Arsenio Hall - Floyd keeps on blaming Pacman for his insecurities and fear.
Arsenio Hall once called the Filipinos monkeys but if you look at him, he looks more of a monkey compared to us.
Anyway, the best thing to do is ignore these type of people, if they are happy doing these things, then let them be.

Is that what the Americans stand for?..oh well, the great American warrior Gen. Douglas McArthur once claimed on his Asian conquest, "give me 10thousand Filipino soldiers and I can conquer the whole world"..and who are we Asians?=)

My fellow pinoys, think about that show on TV running here called "nita negrita". I have absolutely never bothered to watch it because the optics are just horrible, especially in a context where brown skin people are being bombarded with ads telling them they are ugly, and that for 5 pesos, they can find beautiful white skin in a small pouch. Of course the poisons causing the whitening are conveniently left out. This TV show would be forgivable in the sense that the Philippines is not an "advanced" country, but for the fact that the producers know exactly what they are peddling. If as they say, they wanted to show that beauty comes in all shades, they could simply have picked a morena pinay actress, but instead, they resorted to cartoonish blackface. That is racism my dear pinoy friends, pure and simple. That is exactly what this young lady is doing in this video, and some of us may stop to think twice before even letting our family members watch that show - because it no doubt offends sensibilities as much as this nonsense from this bimbo.

God bless, and God help the people of Japan!
