Victoria Beckham: My clothes aren’t sexy

Victoria Beckham hates using the word sexy to describe her dresses as it "sounds really gross".

The designer is gearing up to show her latest collection at New York Fashion Week, which kicks off in earnest today.

Ahead of the presentation she tried to pin down exactly why her line has been so successful since its launch in 2008.

"I do what I do because I love women; I'm a real girl's girl. I want to empower women, I want them to feel good about themselves and that's what the feedback is. That people get in one of my dresses and they feel good, they feel confident. You know, they're, I hate the word sexy, but hey..." she told Love magazine, "because it just sounds really gross but it makes a woman feel sexy without the dresses being overtly sexual, if that makes sense."

Victoria is proud that her creations appeal to both men and women. She has worked hard to ensure they make females feel good about themselves but don't show too much skin or ever appear vulgar.

"A man would find the dress sexy and, quite often, they have a bit of an austere feel about them, some of the dresses," she explained. "They quite often have quite high necks and they're below the knee - but what makes it sexy is the fit, it's the cut and that zip that goes right down the back of the dress... I wish I knew another word for sexy, because it sounds a bit like, eurgh. And it's not overtly sexual you know, it's not."

Victoria spends a lot of time promoting her collections, although often she manages to fly under the radar. As she doesn't have her own store, she enjoys travelling to shops who stock her pieces.

She usually stages events where she gets to meet the women who buy her line, sometimes even accompanying them into the dressing room to help them perfect their look.

This has given her a strong insight into the type of woman she is catering for.

"She's a woman who appreciates luxury, she likes fashion, it's all about quality, as well and I'd say that it's, what else would I say? Yeah, she's confident," she said.

Victoria is thought to be planning to expand her fashion empire over the coming months, which is said to be one of the reasons she and her family have moved back to London. Her soccer star husband David Beckham has signed with French team Paris Saint-Germain FC, meaning she will be spending more time in Paris. There are also rumours she will be opening her debut store in the UK capital.

"When they were discussing it, Victoria said one of her future ambitions is to take Europe by storm with her label," an insider told British magazine Closer.

"In Paris, she can really network and she's great friends with designer Karl Lagerfeld, who's based there - he will open doors for her."

A gnome grows in Chelsea - at the flower show, that is

By Paul Casciato LONDON (Reuters) - Some spectators at London's Chelsea Flower Show wouldn't be caught dead with one in the trunk of their Bentley, but garden gnomes have turned up at the show's 100th edition this year, for charity. The Royal Horticultural Society (RHS), which runs Chelsea in the grounds of the Christopher Wren-built Royal Hospital Chelsea, has lifted a ban on the ceramic figures with floppy hats and beards in order to raise funds for an RHS charity that supports the use of
