Copies of Chief Justice Renato Corona's supposed bank accounts acquired by the prosecution are fake documents, a bank official said on Monday.
Philippine Savings Bank-Katipunan Branch Annabelle Tiongson disowned copies of Corona’s bank accounts, noting that they are not faithful reproduction of the original documents.
“These are fake documents. They did not come from our bank,” Tiongson said.
The prosecution attached Corona's photocopied bank records in their request for subpoena and are to be presented as evidence for Article II of the impeachment complaint which pertains to Corona’s statements of assets, liabilities and net worth.
Prosecutor Oriental Mindoro Rep. Reynaldo Umali earlier told the impeachment court that a “small lady” approached him with the photocopies of the bank documents in Feb. 2.
However, Senator Vicento Sotto III noted that based on the CCTV footage of the Senate during that day, no “small lady” handed Umali such documents.
“Mahirap naman paniwalaan yung script ninyo. Why do you need to attach fake documents with your request for subpoena?” Senator Jinggoy Estrada told the prosecution.
Lead prosecutor Iloilo Rep. Niel Tupas replied that they were in “good faith” when they attached the copies.
“If it is a fake document, then I think it is proper to cancel the subpoena,” said Senate President Juan Ponce Enrile, presiding officer of the impeachment court.
Enrile gave the prosecution 24 hours to explain how they obtained the leaked bank documents.
“We are all lawyers here. There are ethical standards to be observed by us,” Enrile reminded the House panel.
Meanwhile, Senator Francis Escudero pointed out that PSBank President Pascual Garcia has already testified that the bank accounts indicated in the leaked documents existed.
Escudero asked Tiongson to check once more and compare the leaked documents with their original copies to verify under oath if they are fake or not.
