Philippines to fly over disputed South China Sea: Aquino

Philippine military and commercial aircraft will keep flying over disputed areas in the South China Sea despite Chinese warnings over the airspace, President Benigno Aquino said on Monday. "We will still fly the routes that we fly based on the international law from the various conventions we entered into," Aquino told reporters when asked whether the Philippines accepted China's position. The Chinese military last week ordered a US Navy P-8 Poseidon surveillance plane away from airspace …

The Philippines is seeking a "stronger commitment" from the United States to help its ally, the defence minister said on Monday, as China asserts its sovereignty over disputed areas of the South China Sea. China claims most of the South China Sea, through which $5 trillion in ship-borne trade passes every year, and the Philippines, Vietnam, Malaysia, Taiwan and Brunei have overlapping claims. China said on Monday it had lodged a complaint with the United States over a U.S. spy plane that flew …

US Marines testify at Philippines murder trial of colleague

Four US Marines took the witness stand Tuesday at the murder trial of their comrade accused of killing a local transgender woman in the Philippines, lawyers who attended the closed-door proceedings said. The American servicemen were asked to testify on what the defendant, Private First Class Joseph Pemberton, had told them shortly after the October 24, 2014 killing, the lawyers said. "I think I may have killed a he or she," Lance Corporal Michael Rose told the court when asked what Pemberton …

Full-house in Kiev bar inspired by Russian propaganda

The title of the menu, "Long live Junta", and its Hitler-like caricatures of Vladimir Putin are some of the more benign gags at a new bar in Kiev packed nightly with crowds. Opened this month, the Karatel bar, whose name translates as "The Punisher", offers a tongue-in-cheek gastronomical take on all the main cliches of Russian propaganda about Ukraine's conflict with pro-Moscow separatists in the east. The owners, some of them Ukrainian army veterans, offer a discount to active soldiers. …

B.B. King death probed as homicide after poison claim: coroner

Police in Las Vegas have launched a homicide investigation into the death of B.B. King, a Nevada coroner's office said Monday, after the blues guitar legend’s daughters reportedly accused his aides of poisoning him. King died at age 89 on May 14 in Las Vegas, where he kept a residence while he kept up a gruelling schedule of tours that ended only last year. Two of King's daughters -- Karen Williams and Patty King -- have alleged he was poisoned by his business manager Laverne Toney and his …

Stop making fun of Vice President Jejomar Binay’s skin color.

This is the appeal of the United Nationalist Alliance (UNA), as it takes offense against administration coalition Team PNoy’s statement about color branding.

“When you say black, are you referring to the Vice President’s skin color?” UNA secretary-general Toby Tiangco said after Liberal Party (LP) said 2013 polls will be between “black and white.”

In a statement, Tiangco said LP acting president Joseph Emilio Abaya’s declaration may be seen as a subtle reference to the Vice President’s dark complexion.

“It’s okay for us because we don’t have fair skin colors if they are now basing it on the color of the skin because the Vice President is dark that’s why it’s a battle between black and white,” Tiangco said.

“But we again appeal to the leadership of LP to go beyond the innuendoes about skin color and to stop pitting the Vice President against the President,” he said.

But Tiangco, also a campaign manager for UNA, said the administration party should decide whether it wants to refer to its coalition as the “white” party or the “yellow” party.

“The Liberal Party is apparently confused as to its color branding simply because of the confusing multi-color mix of senatorial bets in the LP coalition ticket,” he said.

Binay is one of the leaders of UNA after forming agreeing his party Partido Demokratiko Pilipino (PDP)-Laban to coalesce with former President Joseph “Erap” Estrada’s Pwersa ng Masang Pilipino.

UNA is the only coalition who managed to field in a complete ticket that will clash against President Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III’s bets for the senatorial elections this coming May.

  • Filipina maid photographs "modern slavery" in Hong Kong

By Emma Batha LONDON (Thomson Reuters Foundation) - A Filipina maid in Hong Kong has published stark photographs of burned and beaten domestic workers to highlight the "modern slavery" she says has long been the city's shameful secret. "Hong Kong is a very modern, successful city but people treat their helpers like slaves," said Xyza Cruz Bacani, whose black and white portraits won her a scholarship from the Magnum Foundation to start studying at New York University this month. It's common …
