1/3 of voter registrants in Mandaue are teenagers

TEENAGERS comprised most of the registrants for the Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan Elections (BSKE) in Mandaue City, said the Commission on Elections (Comelec).

Lawyer Anna Fleur Abelgas-Gujilde, Election Officer IV of Comelec Mandaue, told reporters on Thursday, July 14, 2022, that about 1/3 of their registration turnouts came from teenagers 15 to 17 years old who were applicants for the SK elections.

Abelgas-Gujilde said that from July 4 to 13, the Comelec yielded about 3,091 registered voters (a mixture of new and reactivated voters). Of this number, 1,060 are teenagers.

In a random interview conducted by SunStar Cebu, some teenage applicants said they chose to register despite the impending postponement of the BSKE as it is better to prepare early.

Rogim Agudo, 18, a grade 12 student and first-time voter, said aside from preparation, being a registered voter provides an advantage for her in seeking employment.

Abelgas-Gujilde said they also noticed an increase in the number of people who visited the office to register, from around 200 average applicants per day in the last BSKE registration in 2018 to 400 this year.

The Comelec Mandaue expected the number to increase even further, up to 600 applicants per day, on the last days of the voter's registration.

She cited the barangay officials' cooperation for the increased registration turnouts, stressing that some of them transport their constituents who do not have money to the Comelec office just to register.

The voter registration, which is being done in different satellite Comelec offices nationwide, will end on July 23.

Comelec Mandaue also has offsite registration on Saturdays at the Pacific Mall Mandaue in Barangay Bakilid.

Applicants have been advised to bring their own ballpen and download and fill in the registration form from the Comelec website to hasten the application process.

Abelgas-Gujilde said an extension for the registration is possible if the BSKE postponement is soon confirmed.

The BSKE, if not rescheduled, will be conducted on December 5, 2022. (HIC)
