12 tech-voc high schools to model DepEd's K12 program

By Nikka Garriga

PASIG CITY, METRO MANILA—The Department of Education (DepEd) has selected 12 technical vocational secondary schools to model the Senior High School Program under the K to 12 Basic Education Reform Program.

The schools will be provided financial assistance worth P1 million each to efficiently implement the program introduced this June.

The budget can be used to develop a competency-based curriculum for identified areas of specialization based on industry inputs and training regulations from theTechnical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA).

“Just like a research and development process, we expect to draw out the best practices of participating model schools which we can replicate in the years ahead,” said DepEd chief Armin Luistro.

Among the schools set to implement the program include the Rizal Experimental Station & Pilot School for Cottage Industries in Pasig City; Angeles City National Trade School in Pampanga; Subangdaku Technical Vocational High School in Mandaue City; and Tagum National Trade School in Tagum City.

The Senior High School Program is part of the recent reform in the country's basic education system which seeks to produce high school graduates equipped to take on employment after school.

Overall, the P12-million subsidy will be used to prepare instruction materials and purchase supplies and other learning resources.

It will also be allocated for training of teachers who will teach the tech-voc specializations such as agriculture, fisheries, business, and entrepreneurship.
