14 Navy reservists awarded Bronze Cross Medal

FOURTEEN Navy reservists were awarded with the Bronze Cross Medal, a military decoration of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP), at the Naval Reserve Center-Eastern Visayas on March 13.

The awardees were identified as PO3 Darwin John Moises, PO2 Ricardo Alano, PO2 Joselito Lorzano, PO2 Eva Melon, PO2 Winkie Malinao, PO3 Delia Mendez, PO3 Mercia Lorzano, PO3 Loedel Mendez, Sgt. Joven Labin, Sgt. Edwin Buenviaje, POR Carmelo Lurica, PO3 Noel Aragon, PO3 Ryan Bagahansol and PO3 Ranelo Ruelo.

The medal was awarded for reservists’ heroism and extraordinary bravery at the height of the enhanced community quarantine last year. Leading the ceremony was Cebu City Councilor Donaldo “Dondon” Honteveros and Capt. John Barrameda, commander.

The Naval Forces Reserve– Eastern Visayas was recognized in September 2020 as the Philippine Navy Ready Reserve Unit of the Year by the AFP. Captain Barrameda was also hailed as Officer of the Year.

The coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) has infected 635,698 in the Philippines and claimed the lives of 12,866 Filipinos. The Naval Reserve Center welcomes those who finished at least senior high school and graduates of authorized basic military instruction to be reservists. Under Republic Act 7077, reservists do not only augment the military force in time of war. Much of the service they do are focused on socio-economic activities like repair of schools in remote areas, rescue operations during emergencies, collaborating with local government units in preparation of goods and services for deployment.
