A POLICE official reminded parents to keep an eye on their children after two children drowned in Butuanon River in Mandaue City Wednesday, August 3, 2022.

Police Staff Sergeant Lemar Pontillas of the Mandaue City Police Office (MCPO) Station 3 in Barangay Basak, where the incident was reported, told SunStar Cebu that the two minors were relatives.

They were identified as Same Calderon, 5, and his nephew Alexander Calderon, 7, both residents of Barangay Paknaan in Mandaue City.

Pontillas said that based on their initial investigation, the two children, together with another minor who is also their relative, planned to swim in the river without their parent's consent.

The children specifically swam near Zone Ahos in Barangay Paknaan.

While swimming, the other minor (name withheld for privacy), who also happens to be Same's nephew, said he noticed that Same and Alexander had disappeared from the water.

He immediately went out of the water to report the incident to his aunt, Pontillas added.

The incident was then reported to the authorities, prompting a search and rescue operation that resulted in the recovery of the two bodies.

Same and Alexander were brought to a hospital in Mandaue, but they were proclaimed dead, Pontillas said.

Operatives of the MCPO Station 3 had requested an autopsy on the two bodies to the Regional Forensic Unit-Central Visayas to determine what really happened to the two children.

Pontillas reminded parents to carefully attend to their children, especially minors, to prevent similar incidents from happening again.

Butuanon River starts in Cebu City, flows through Mandaue City, then drains into the Mactan Channel.

More than 3,000 Filipinos die each year from drowning, with children particularly vulnerable to this preventable occurrence, according to the Department of Health. (HIC)
