Scotland were not good enough to progress in their first major tournament in 23 years but will make sure they don't wait as long for the next one, manager Steve Clarke said after his side's exit from Euro 2020 on Tuesday. A 3-1 defeat by 2018 World Cup runners-up Croatia at Hampden Park left the Scots last in Group D and yet to reach the knockout stages of a European championship or World Cup in 11 attempts. "We're disappointed the tournament's ended early for us but we've got a lot to be happy about, the way we got there after 23 years," Clarke told reporters.

Croatia coach Zlatko Dalic was overjoyed to have steered his side into the Euro 2020 knockout stages after second-half goals from Luka Modric and Ivan Perisic helped them to a 3-1 Group D win over Scotland at Hampden Park on Tuesday. Both teams needed a win to advance and after Callum McGregor cancelled out Nikola Vlasic's opener for the Croatians, Modric netted a superb long-range effort before Perisic sealed the win with a glancing header.
It only takes a second to score a goal, so the old saying goes, but unfortunately for Scotland it took them three hours and 42 minutes to find the net at Euro 2020 and their struggles up front ultimately led to their downfall. A 3-1 defeat by Croatia in their final game at Hampden Park left Scotland bottom of Group D and out of the tournament, with a solitary point gained in a spirited, yet goalless, draw with England. Goals are football's most valuable currency and for all Scotland's fiery determination and dogged resilience, for all their hustle and bustle, for all their determined aggression, they struggled to put the ball in the net when it mattered.

Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin, for the first time, said Tuesday he will support long-debated changes to the military justice system that would remove decisions on prosecuting sexual assault cases from military commanders. In a statement, obtained by The Associated Press, Austin said he supports taking those sexual assault and related crimes away from the chain of command, and let independent military lawyers handle them. The Pentagon has long resisted such a change, but Austin and other senior leaders are slowly acknowledging that the military has failed to make progress against sexual assault, and some changes are needed.

Gareth Southgate's hand might have been forced but England's fans got their wish as Jack Grealish made his first start of Euro 2020 in the 1-0 win over the Czech Republic on Tuesday. After 12 minutes, when Grealish lofted a sublime cross for Raheem Sterling to head his second goal of the tournament, it appeared the Aston Villa man was ready to light up Wembley. When he was substituted after 68 minutes, however, the 25-year-old trudged down the touchline looking deflated and the question will be whether he did enough to nail down a place as England head towards a seismic last-16 clash against Germany, France or Portugal at Wembley next Tuesday.

After ineffective performances in Croatia's first two Euro 2020 matches, it seemed Luka Modric's influence was on the wane, but the midfielder showed form is temporary and class permanent as he stepped up when his country needed him most. The 35-year-old Croatia captain led his team out at a raucous Hampden Park on Tuesday for their winner-takes-all clash with Scotland, a place in the last 16 the prize on offer. After an ordinary season with Real Madrid, the 2018 world player of the year failed to inspire his countrymen in their 1-0 defeat by England and he offered very little when in possession against Czech Republic on Friday.
