TWENTY-SEVEN fishermen were nabbed in Liloan town few minutes past midnight on April 23, 2020 in Bagacay Point Marine Sanctuary, Brgy. Catarnan.
According to PSMSgt. Jonas Catubig of Liloan Police Station who spoke with Superbalita Cebu, it was the fish warden from the Bantay Dagat group who saw a fishing boat operating in a prohibited area and immediately alerted the police station.
Among the fishermen apprehended were Leodigardo Legarte, 54, Jovanie dela Torre, 32, Christopher Amancio, 42, Enerson Amancio, 40, Jerry Amancio, 45, Jonathan Barriga, 44, Ronald Tampus, 34, Roman Serrano Jr., 26, Begee Amancio, 20, Jeorge Abrasaldo, 26, Ramil Aroma, 37, Agustin Capoy, 57, Rodel Gonzaga, 41, Rene Galindo, 47 and Jake Mantalban, 31.
Other persons involved were Regelito Serrano, 39, Armando Siatino, 44, Reggie Vallejo, 40, Norman Laguna Sr., 58, Cristuto Montalban, 34, Celso Endico, 51, Jurex Aacarial, 36, Arnold Laguna, 35, Ritchie Razon, 42, Agustin Gonzaga Jr., 43, Archie Aroma, 35 and Bernie Amancio, 44.
All 27 individuals are residents of Brgy. Looc in Danao City.
The police and Bantay Dagat personnel were able to confiscate a bundle of fishing nets, the boat they used and an estimated 70 kilos of fish that the fishermen got from the fish sanctuary, estimated to be worth over P8,000.
Catubig added that these fishermen violated fishing guidelines by entering the protected fish sanctuary, which is owned by the town of Liloan.
The 27 individuals will be facing charges for violating Republic Act 10654 or Illegal Fishing. All confiscated materials will be formally turned over to the Municipal Environmental Natural Resources Office (Menro) of Liloan. (BBT / CBQ)
