AT LEAST 30 vehicles have been impounded for various violations at a checkpoint manned by personnel from the Highway Patrol Group (HPG), Cebu City Police Office, Land Transportation Office and Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board in Central Visayas at the South Road Properties in Cebu City on Friday, July 22, 2022.

The activity was held simultaneously across the country.

Police Major Silvestre Cenia Jr., chief of HPG Metro Cebu, said 20 motorcycles and 10 four-wheeled vehicles were impounded for various traffic violations under Presidential Decree 96, declaring unlawful the use or attachment of sirens, bells, horns, whistles or similar gadgets that emit exceptionally loud or startling sounds, including domelights and other signaling or flashing devices on motor vehicles.

Cars that were impounded were those whose owners have been blacklisted by banks for failing to pay their car loan.

Some motorists were also issued citation tickets and TOP (temporary operator's permit) for lack of documents for their vehicles, while others were apprehended for failing to renew their vehicle's registration and driver's license.

Those with improvised motorcycle mufflers were also issued citation tickets and TOP (temporary operator's permit).

Some of the violators cited the Covid-19 pandemic as the reason for not being able to renew their documents, but Cenia said the LTO has been giving them an extension of at least two months to give them more time to renew.

“Moingon sila nga tungod sa pandemic, until now normal na man at nagbigay naman ng memo ang taga LTO. Halimbawa mga duha ka buwan wala pa ma rehistro imong sakyanan o motor kana amo gitagaan og chance, pero kung six months na ug usa ka tuig na guro murag dili na maayo,” said Cenia.

(They said because of the pandemic, but it's already normal now and the LTO has issued a memo. For example, if your car or motorcycle hasn't been registered for two months, we gave them a chance, but if it's six months or even a year, then maybe that's not acceptable). (AYB, TPT)
