300 cops deployed to ensure peaceful demolition in Apas

MORE than 300 police personnel were deployed to ensure a peaceful and safe demolition of houses in Barangay Apas, Cebu City on Thursday, November 3, 2022.

Of the cops deployed, 90 percent were members of the Civil Disturbance Management team who were tasked to assist the demolition team.

Police Regional Office-Central Visayas Director Roderick Agustus Alba, during his visit to the site Thursday, said most of the police personnel deployed to the area had no firearms.

He said the presence of the police was needed to ensure that chaos will happen during the demolition of around 200 houses in Sitio San Miguel.

He said there was resistance from the residents, but this was prevented from escalating as the police had ensured that maximum tolerance was observed.

"Will see to it hanggang matapos itong activity na ito, safe and secure lahat, so whoever violates the law or the existing policy, either sa part nang nag dedemolis at saka sa communities involved, sana naman wag, I will implement squarely and fairly," Alba said.

(Will see to it that until the end of this activity, everything is safe and secure. So whoever violates the law or the existing policy, either in the part of the demolition team or the communities involved, I will implement squarely and fairly.)

Cebu City Police Office Director Ireneo Dalogdog, for his part, said some residents resisted the demolition Thursday, but the sheriff was able to explain to them what happened, resulting in the easing of tension. (BBT/LMY)
