Star Cinema was the biggest income earner in 2013 with its entries ”Girl, Boy, Bakla, Tomboy” and “Pagpag: Siyam Na Buhay” grossing more than P420 million and P180 million, respectively.
In a bid to continue the streak of top-grossing movies, Star Cinema opens 2014 with “Bride For Rent” starring Kim Chiu and Xian Lim, a tandem whose movie debut “Bakit Di Ka Crush Ng Crush Mo?” earned more than P100 million in August 2013.
But will it? 23-year-old Kim Chiu admits that she never stopped praying for good box office turn out for the film with Xian that opens today, Jan. 15. She is aware of the box-office successes of their Star Cinema predecessors at the 2013 MMFF and hopes to “at least duplicate or surpass” what “Bakit Di Ka Crush Ng Crush Mo” earned last year.
Kim and Xian are banking on the support they received from their fans for their movie debut. She said “Bride for Rent” has more romantic moments between her and Xian and it is “funnier.”
“Mas effort kaming matawa sila sa mga pinaggagawa namin. Sobrang challenging ang role ko kasi iba sa mga dating roles ko na ma-drama. Ngayon something new to offer this 2014. Para sa lahat ng kalungkutan na nangyari sa 2013, buksan natin ang 2014 na punong-puno ng kasiyahan, punong-puno ng tawanan, sabay-sabay tayong ma-in-love sa pelikula,” said Kim.
Director Mae Czarina Cruz, a bride-to-be, seems confident of how “Bride for Rent” would fare at the box office. She explained, “The combination of Kim and Xian has already proven themselves as a successful box office love team. At the same time I think the story is something people will be able to appreciate and relate to and it's something very entertaining. It's something that we need right now after all that have happened in the past.”
She believes the two have found their niche in romantic comedy.
“They are very natural when it comes to comedy,” she lauded. “In their age group, it's a niche and wala silang kapareho so maswerte sila at kailangang pahalagahan nila ito. Their friendship is genuine and their chemistry is natural.”
Mae said Kim has grown as an actress and moviegoers would notice that from her adlibs in the movie.
“She's very animated here. She's pretty pero yung character niya ang nakakatuwa especially the things she did in the film. She has become very comfortable in this genre and I'd like to say that she has become comfortable in this genre.”
How about Xian?
“Xian was a revelation. I never worked with him before kaya tuwang-tuwa ako sa performance nila. They gave 101% You know the desire to improve themselves, to make things right, to do things right (ay) nandun. Yung success nila ay ma-attribute mo talaga sa effort nilang dalawa.”
In “Bride For Rent,” Kim plays Rocky who would move heaven and earth to make money for her family. On the other hand, Xian is Rocco who is cast to marry a “fake bride” in order to become eligible for his grandmother’s millions-worth trust fund.
Also in “Bride for Rent” are Dennis Padilla, Matt Evans, Empoy Marquez, Martin del Rosario and Asia’s Queen of Songs Pilita Corrales, among others.
