The suspects were identified as Police Staff Sergeant Erwin Gobis; Police Senior Master Sergeant Demetrio Laroya; Police Corporal Ariel Pasion, all assigned at the PNP Health Service in Camp Crame and Police Staff Sergeant Gerry Ocampo of the PNP Crime Laboratory.
Aside from the four, other personalities arrested were Leo Ocinar, a non-uniformed personnel; former cop Fidel Agustin; and Teddy Carpio, the owner of the establishment that operates an online derby.
Authorities recovered more than P14,000 gambling money, two television sets, digital video recorder, betting ticket, two digital boxes and 23 bottles of intoxicating liquor.
PNP Chief Oscar Albayalde admitted that despite their constant reminder and warning, there are still erring cops who choose to participate in illegal activities.
“Ito ang sinasabi natin sa mga pulis na matitigas ang ulo (This is what we warned hard-headed cops about). As we’ve said, we will not relent on this program and we will show no mercy on this people,” Albayalde said.
The arrested cops are facing charges for violating Presidential Decree 1603 and for drinking alcohol in public.
“We are dead serious in our campaign against scalawags at saka yung pagtaas ng antas ng disiplina ng aming organisasyon, (to upgrade the level of discipline within our organization),” the PNP Chief stressed. (with reports from Lea Ylagan)
