FIVE barangays were affected and 214 families were evacuated as a result of severe flooding in the northern Cebu town of Sogod on Monday night, Oct. 25, 2021.

The affected families were evacuated to the church of the St. James the Apostle Parish, while others took refuge in the barangay hall and the health center which have currently been turned into evacuation centers.

Police Corporal Jose Rostel Hortelano of the Sogod Police Station told Superbalita Cebu that Sitio San Lorenzo, Barangay Poblacion is estimated to be neck-deep in floodwater. The sitio was severely affected as it is low-lying.

In other barangays that were flooded, like Bagatayam, Damolog, Bawo and Ibabao, the floodwater was knee-deep.

Hortelano said a tornado had hit the mountain.

Sogod Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office chief Helen Zamora said 214 families from five villages had been affected.

The rain started at 3 p.m. on Monday and escalated into torrents from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. The floodwaters then rose quickly as the tornado struck.

Four houses were swept away by the flood, but no one was reported injured.

Aid pours in

Following the incident, the Cebu Provincial Capitol turned over relief goods to the families affected consisting of rice, canned goods and instant noodles, clothes, bedding, mosquito nets, towels and hygiene kits, pails and cauldrons and kitchen utensils, Sugbo News said.

In addition, Gov. Gwendolyn Garcia promised to give P20,000 in financial aid to each of the affected families.

Garcia also said she would download funds to the Municipality of Sogod for the purchase of galvanized iron sheets and plywood so affected residents could rebuild their homes.

Rep. Vincent “Duke” Frasco (Cebu, fifth district) also distributed rice to the survivors and committed to give the families P5,000 in financial aid from his office, Sugbo News reported.

Present during the distribution were Sogod Mayor Richard Streegan and Vice Mayor Lissa Marie “Monyeen” Durano-Streegan.

Also helping the affected families were Bakud gubernatorial bet Ace Durano and former 5th district representative Red Durano, who led the distribution of food packs to over 300 families affected by Monday’s Sogod flash floods.

Ace will face off against reelectionist Garcia in the 2022 polls.

Together with Danao City Mayor Nito Durano, Ace and Red distributed relief goods, face masks and clothing at the Sogod Multi-Purpose Gym and assured that more help--particularly food and other daily essentials--would follow.

Red said the Sogod residents could also benefit from the Bakud political party’s Ayuda program which provides different forms of assistance, including subsistence assistance that aids victims of calamities, as well as assistance for house repair due to the calamity.

The Danao City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (CDRRMO) was also placed on immediate stand-by for possible rescue and retrieval operations, and the team of Danao CDRRMO chief Roland Reyes provided medical aid to the Sogod residents.

Other towns

Other neighboring towns also rushed to Sogod to help.

Former Borbon Mayor Neal Vergara and Bakud Borbon mayoralty candidate Gitoy Ornopia joined the Duranos in the distribution and also announced that the Barangay Hall of Goyong, Borbon is now also a drop-off point for relief goods for the Sogod residents.

The City of Bogo and the towns of Medellin and Daanbantayan have already delivered their assistance at the barangay hall, which will then be handed over to Sogod.

This is in line with Bakud’s donation drive launched Monday. The main drop-off point is at the Bakud Headquarters on the second floor of Sands Gateway Mall in Danao City. (GPL, CTL, PR)
