MORE than 400 inmates in Cebu City Jail have recovered from the coronavirus disease (Covid-19) and no new cases has been reported for over a month now.
In a Facebook post of Cebu City Public Information Office (PIO), a total of 427 inmates, who contracted the disease, have recovered.
Cebu City Jail Warden Superintendent Julius Arro said the immediate intervention has helped control the spread of the virus.
The first case from Cebu City Jail was logged on April 19, 2020 and in just two weeks, the infected inmates in the facility reached more than 300, according to the PIO.
The latest inmate infected with coronavirus was reported on June 12.
All infected inmates were transferred to the jail's new building that served as the isolation facility.
The incident also prompted Cebu City Mayor Edgardo Labella to require all persons deprived of liberty (PDL) to undergo Covid-19 test before admission or release from the jail facility pursuant to Executive Order 71 issued on April 27.
Cebu City Jail currently has 6,582 inmates. It was designed to accommodate only up to 1,500 inmates. (JJL/With PR)
