5.3M vocational grads assured of jobs by 2016 –TESDA

By Alexander Villafania

TAGUIG CITY, METRO MANILA–The Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) sets to have 5.3 million employed graduates by the year 2016.

TESDA Director General Joel Villanueva said the agency is ramping up the number of its enrollees and extending networks to find jobs for graduates.

The agency is also improving the curriculums of different courses to give students the latest education materials.

People in rural areas should take technical-vocational courses to improve skills and find better employment, the official said.

"The direction we are taking is to reach the grassroots and empower the reached with quality technical education and skills development interventions,” said Villanueva in a statement.

To increase enrollment, TESDA launched its first classroom-on-wheels, a 100-seater bus modified to be used for training. It also embarked on a school furniture production project that converted confiscated illegal logs into school furniture.

TESDA is also working the Department of Education (DepEd) to define its role in the massive K+12 project that overhauls the country's basic education system
