MANILA, Philippines – Five Indian nationals staying illegally in the country have been arrested in Davao City, the Bureau of Immigration (BI) said Friday.
In a statement, Immigration Commissioner Jaime Morente said the foreigners were arrested last February 4 during operations conducted by the operatives from the bureau’s Intelligence Division Mindanao Task Group.
Morente said he issued a mission order for the operation after his office received a complaint from Davao City residents claiming that the foreigners were engaged in a “5-6” lending scheme.
The Indian nationals, identified as Darshna Devi, Gurbhej Singh Toor, Lovepreet Singh Waring, Amarjit Singh Toor, and Sukhmander Singh, were apprehended in their residences in Barangay Cabantian in Buhangin after they failed to present proof of their legal residence in the country.
Four of them are found to be overstaying aliens while one is an illegal entrant, having no record of arrival, the bureau said.
“They entered the country as mere tourists but they blatantly violated our immigration laws by overstaying and engaging in gainful activity without the appropriate permits and visa,” the BI added.
The bureau said the foreigners are now detained at its detention facility while undergoing deportation proceedings.
