A TOTAL of 83 centenarians in Central Visayas have already received the P100,000 cash gifts from the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) 7 for people who reach the age of 100.
Shalaine Lucero, DSWD 7 assistant director, said the remaining five of their target number of centenarians for this year will receive their cash gifts by next week.
The Centenarians Act of 2016 guarantees Filipino centenarians, whether residing in the country or abroad, a P100,000 cash reward and a felicitation letter from the President congratulating the celebrants for their longevity.
Moreover, a total of 155,693 indigent senior citizens in Central Visayas have already received the monthly social pension for the second semester of this year, while 123,344 senior citizens are still to receive their stipend.
Lucero said that as of Saturday, Nov. 14, 2020, the DSWD 7 had already disbursed funds amounting to P491.48 million.
Charmaine Camara, DSWD 7 information officer, said to ensure efficient distribution, the social pension payouts were conducted in barangays near the residence of the beneficiaries.
Those who could not physically collect their stipends were allowed to send representatives with their letters of authorization. The DSWD 7 staff also went to houses of bedridden beneficiaries to accommodate them.
The social pension is a program under Republic Act 9994, or the Expanded Senior Citizens Act of 2010, which provides a monthly stipend of P500 to indigent senior citizens to augment their daily subsistence and other medical needs.
It is distributed on a semestral basis, or P3,000 for every six months. (WBS)
