5 things to look forward to during Gabii sa Kabilin 2022

·3 min read

After two years of hosting the Gabii sa Kabilin (GSK) online, the Ramon Aboitiz Foundation Inc. (Rafi) is finally bringing this much-awaited event back to the streets of Cebu. On Oct. 21, from 6 p.m. to 12 midnight, guests can take a step into Cebu’s culturally rich heritage scene and enjoy the fun activities Rafi has planned for this year’s “Gabii sa Kabilin.”

With the theme, “Padayon,” this GSK is going to be unlike any other. It “highlights why the Cebuano race, spirit and personality have continued to exist and thrive amid the many crises and challenges” that have come in the way of the Cebuano over the past two years.

It’s a very fitting theme, especially given the challenges we’ve all faced because of the Covid-19 pandemic, which is why we’re all counting down the days until we can once again roam the streets of Cebu and seek out like-minded people looking to enjoy Cebu’s thriving cultural scene.

So, without further ado, here are five things you can look forward to during Gabii sa Kabilin 2022:

Face-to-face tours

The GSK team has partnered with 20 museums and heritage sites from Mandaue City to Cebu City, all the way down to Talisay City. This means guests have access to all the activities and sites participating in Gabii sa Kabilin 2022.

Museums have had a tough time over the past two years, and this is one way for them to come back bigger and stronger than ever. With GSK’s face-to-face tours, guests can experience Cebu’s heritage and cultural scene in the flesh.

While there’s certainly convenience in virtual tours and online activities, nothing beats stepping into a historically-charged site and feeling the energy of hundreds of years’ worth of history and culture surrounding you.

Free unlimited shuttle services

Guests holding a GSK ticket are eligible for free shuttle services to and from the participating museums and heritage sites. You don’t have to worry about hailing a cab or calculating a jeepney’s routes because the GSK team has organized GSK-designated buses to make sure guests can get to where they want to be.

On top of those free shuttle services, each guest has one complimentary ride on a horse-drawn carriage—otherwise known as a tartanilla—from the Sugbu Chinese Heritage Museum to Fort San Pedro and back.

Cultural presentations

Each participating museum or heritage site has its own set of cultural presentations that provide rich information about Cebu’s past. Guests are guaranteed a great time with these fun and interactive performances which can vary anywhere between a folk dance to a dramatic reenactment—when it comes to Cebu, nothing is ever off the table.

Online contests

Cebuanos are very competitive, and there’s always room for competition in grand events such as the Gabii sa Kabilin 2022. The GSK team is preparing several contests such as the Heritage Hunt, which will require teams to complete a series of challenges in selected museums and sites. All ticket holders are also welcome to participate in the online vlogging and phone photography contests.

Food markets

If Cebuanos are very competitive, then it’s nothing against their love for food. A lot of people forget how food can carry thousands of years’ worth of history in one bite, but the Gabii sa Kabilin food markets will surely be a reminder of Cebu’s rich delicacies.

Since food is part of history and culture, it’s a given that there will be food served during the six-hour event. Fuel up and keep yourself going from start to finish by grabbing a bite of Cebu’s finest dishes and ride the culinary high that can only be brought about by the Cebuano’s rich palate.

The GSK 2022 early bird ticket discount only runs until Sept. 21. Children aged seven and under, accompanied by adults, get free admission and rides.

Tickets can be purchased at participating museums and heritage sites, so visit the Gabii sa Kabilin Facebook page for more information.
