In case you were asleep when everyone greeted January 1 this year, you still have a chance to experience the start of another new year: the Year of the Wood Horse, which begins on Jan. 31, 2014. This auspicious Chinese holiday is also called the first day of the lunar new year and the spring festival.

There is also a belief in using amulets or charms to ward off negativity and to generate more luck.
