THE sixth Philippine Superliga Beach Volleyball Challenge Cup will have eight teams, said league chairman Popoy Juico of the tournament slated on Feb. 26 to 28, 2021 at the Subic Tennis Center.
Sta. Lucia, Abanse Negrense and the United Auctioneers Inc. will have two teams each while F2 Logistics and the debuting Toby Sports will have one squad each.
Juico also announced that they are moving closer to getting the green light to conduct the tournament after they received clearance from the Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority (SBMA). The next hurdle is to get the go signal from the Department of Health.
“The SBMA in the Region 3 Task Force approved our protocols, and the Region 3 Task Force involves people from the Department of Health (DOH). And they have endorsed our protocols to the Inter-Agency Task Force for the Management of Emerging Infectious Diseases secretariat. And now the DOH is looking at coming up with the new guidelines,” said Juico during his appearance in the Philippine Sportswriters Association online forum.
This year’s edition has the lowest number of teams. The last time this competition was held was in 2019 and it had 14 teams.
Petron emerged as the champion of that tournament. However, the team has since been disbanded for Covid-19-related reasons. (JNP)
