AZKALS Development Team (ADT) got its first win in the Philippines Football League (PFL) after a 2-0 win in a very competitive contest against Mendiola FC 1991 last Nov. 3 at the Philippine Football Federation (PFF) National Training Center in Carmona, Cavite.

After dropping its first two matches against league favorites United City Football Club (UCFC) and Kaya FC-Iloilo, the young ADT squad finally got its first three points with a strong finish.

The match was competitive from the onset. ADT had a couple of chances to score the opening goal before halftime. Mendiola FC 1991 goalie Kenry Balobo fouled Yrick Gallantes in the 45th minute just outside the box. Marvin Angeles took the free kick but his shot went wide. ADT got another opportunity to score a minute later, after Mar Diano was awarded with a penalty kick after being fouled by Louie Polinag inside the box.

Angeles once again took the shot, but his attempt hit the post. The deflection bounced back in front of him, but Angeles once again missed his target.

In the second half, Jarvey Gayoso, who now played as a forward, headed in the opening goal in the 73rd minute. Matthew Custodio scored the second goal in the 81st minute from a beautiful pass by Gallantes.

ADT, composed of the Philippines’ Under-23 players, moved up to third place with Maharlika Manila FC, which played against UCFC as of press time. ADT’s losses were close 1-0 defeats to defending champion UCFC and Kaya FC-Iloilo, which are both currently competing in the AFC Cup.
