The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) stated that they respect and support the possible talks with authorities of the Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP).

In a statement on Saturday (December 7), AFP Spokesman Marine Brigadier General Edgard Arevalo said they support the wisdom of the Commander-in-Chief.

President Rodrigo Duterte previously instructed Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) Secretary Silvestre Bello III to resume talks with communist leader, Jose Maria Sison.

“We understand that those instructions to Sec. Bello are in the nature of exploratory discussion with Mr. Sison and are meant towards the attainment of sustainable peace which is the President’s and also the AFP’s ultimate desire,” Arevalo said in a statement.

Arevalo also reiterates that “if we are to negotiate, therefore, we so do from the position of strength.”—AAC
