THE GMR Megawide Cebu Airport Corporation ordered the removal of desks and booths of local government units placed within the premises of the Mactan-Cebu International Airport (MCIA).

These booths, which were removed on Friday, February 5, 2021, were used by the personnel of the Emergency Operations Center (EOC) of the cities of Cebu, Mandaue, and Lapu-Lapu.

The EOC inspected documents of arriving passengers.

In a broadcast report by Sugbo News, lawyer Glenn Napuli, MCIA acting general manager, said the removal of the desks and booths took effect immediately after the Mactan-Cebu International Airport Authority (MCIAA) Board issued a resolution Friday.

Reasons for removal

The MCIAA Board said that:

• LGUs have no authority to mount desks and booths at the airport and control the flow of passengers.

• The desks and booths manifest encroachment beyond the jurisdiction of the LGUs.

• LGUs have no power and authority within the airport, which is an independent body.

• Cebu Governor Gwendolyn Garcia, an MCIAA Board member, said there are no provisions in the Covid-19 Inter-Agency Task Force (IATF) guidelines that state that LGUs can mount desks and booths inside the airport or can screen arriving passengers. (SunStar Cebu)
