The Alaska Aces hung tough in crunchtime and came away with a 102-94 win over NorthPort to officially book their ticket in the quarterfinals of the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) Philippine Cup on Friday, November 6, at the Angeles University Foundation Sports Arena and Cultural Center in Pampanga.
Energetic forward Rodney Brondial sparked Alaska in the fourth period, scoring nine of his 16 points in a pivotal stretch that saw the Aces erect a 14-point lead, 90-76, with just 4:50 left in the game.
NorthPort tried to come back and came within four, 94-98, after Batang Pier guard Garvo Lañete sank three free-throws with just 33 seconds to go. However, Alaska secured the win behind four clutch free-throws from Maverick Ahanmisi and Brondial.
Aside from his scoring, Brondial also grabbed 10 rebounds. Abu Tratter also had 16 points while Jeron Teng filled the stat-sheet with 14 points, eight boards and six assists. Robbie Herndon added 13 even as Ahanmisi and Vic Manuel contributed 11 markers each to help Alaska bump their win-loss record up to 6-4.
The loss spoiled a career performance by Christian Standhardinger who had 39 points, 16 rebounds, five assists and three steals. The Batang Pier fell further down the standings with their seventh loss in eight games. (JNP)
