The Converge FiberXers has announced that it has named NCAA and UAAP champion coach Aldin Ayo as its new head coach, replacing former mentor Jeffrey Cariaso.

The coaching change was formalized in an announcement made by the team on Wednesday.

This is the first PBA head coaching gig for Ayo, who won championships for Letran in the NCAA back in 2015, and then, La Salle in the UAAP in 2016. He recently stepped down as coach of the Chooks-to-Go 3x3 team to tend to his ailing mother. However, Ayo disclosed that it was his mother who urged him to take on the PBA coaching job.

“I talked to her last night (Tuesday). And this morning, she told me 'Gusto kita makita mag-coach sa PBA.' She said she doesn't want to see me just sitting around the house,” Ayo said.

Converge’s first foray in the PBA went well as it reached the playoffs but got ousted by the TNT Tropang Giga. Team governor Chito Salud is confident that Ayo’s brand of coaching will help the FiberXers move closer to its goal of winning a title.

“The PBA is a challenge that every coach on the rise dreams of taking on. We are confident that coach Ayo’s nose and instinct for the game’s nuances will transform the FiberXers’ brand of play into a consistently competitive and exciting kind worthy of the Filipino fans’ approval and following,” said Chito Salud.

Team owner Dennis Uy also said Ayo is the perfect mentor to mold the team’s young studs.

“We've had the chance to discuss the direction of our team and the vision that we have regarding our brand of play. We have young players with energy and potential who are ready to compete as a team still finding chemistry and its identity. We believe coach Ayo has the background to develop these players into an exciting and cohesive unit,” said Uy.
