Filipina tennis sensation Alex Eala advanced to the round of 16 in the J1 Roehampton after she defeated Italian netter Matilde Paoletti, 6-2, 6-0, in London on Friday morning.
The 16-year old appears to have gotten the groove of playing on a grass court as she easily eliminated the 18-year old Paoletti, who is ranked no. 35 in the International Tennis Federation juniors rankings. Up next for Eala is an opponent she’s familiar in 18-year old Mara Guth of Germany.
Guth was one of the opponents that Eala beat during her historic march to the semifinals of the 2020 Roland Garros Junior Championships. Eala bested the German in a nail biting three-set win, 6-1, 5-7, 6-4. She also handed Guth a 6-3, 6-4 loss in the JA Osaka in October 2019.
Eala and her partner, Priska Madelyn Nugroho, however, saw their run in the girls’ doubles competition come to an end at the hands of the pair of Barbora Palicova of the Czech Republic and Radka Zelnickova of Slovakia, 4-6, 4-6.
The experience, though, that the Filipina tennis phenom is gaining from this tournament, will serve her well as she tries to win her third grand slam when she competes in the 2021 Wimbledon Girls’ on July 5. (JNP)
