Filipina tennis ace Alex Eala continued her rampage as she overcame Ksenia Zaytseva of Russia in a thrilling three-set clash, 7-6, 4-6, 7-5, to move on to the quarterfinals of the JA Trofeo Bonfiglio in Milan, Italy on Thursday night (Philippine time).

The 16-year-old, who is the no. 3 ranked juniors player in the world, was pushed to the hilt by Zaytseva in the first set but the Filipina kept her composure and held on to win, 7-6. The Russian, though, racked up three straight games to take the second set, 6-4, and force a decider. In the third set, Eala found herself trailing by two games but found her second wind and won four straight to take the final set, 7-5, and win the match that lasted nearly three hours.

Up next for Eala in the quarterfinals is Sofia Costoulas of Belgium.

Meanwhile in the girls’ doubles competition, Eala and her American partner, Madison Sieg, ousted Zaytseva and her teammate, Yaroslava Bartashevich, 6-4, 6-3, to advance to the semifinals.

Eala and Sieg found themselves trailing in the first set, 1-4, but quickly turned things around and won the next five games to bag the first set, 6-4. The second set was dominated by the Eala-Sieg tandem to finish the game in one hour and 18 minutes.

Eala and Sieg will battle the Russian duo of Kira Pavlova and Diana Shnaider with a spot in the finals on the line. (JNP)
