Alex Eala moves on to quarterfinals of W15 Manacor final leg

Filipino tennis wunderkind Alex Eala overcame fatigue to thwart German Silvia Ambrosio in a three-set thriller, 7-6, 1-6, 6-3, in the second round of the final leg of the International Tennis Federation (ITF) World Tennis Tour W15 Manacor on Friday in Mallorca, Spain.

The 15-year old tennis wunderkind will now advance to the quarterfinals where she will duke it out against Russian rival Oksana Selekhmeteva, an 18-year old left-handed powerhouse who is ranked 611th in the ITF singles rankings.

The victory was a tough one for Eala. After barely winning the first set, she encountered stiff resistance from Ambrosio — who was coming off a stunning upset of the tournament’s top-seed, Margot Yerolymos of France — who dominated the set and limited the Filipino to a single point. Eala, though, found her second wind and outhustled her opponent in the deciding set to grab up the victory and end the grueling match, which lasted for more than three hours.

Eala, who is the world’s third-ranked juniors player, is looking to recapture her winning touch in the first leg of this tournament, which she won to bag $15,000 cash prize. (JNP)
