Filipina tennis prodigy Alex Eala saw her very first stint in a W60 tournament come to an end after she was ousted by Swiss netter Simona Waltert, 5-7, 6-3, 2-6, in the W60 Bellinzona on Friday in Switzerland.
Things looked good in the first set for Eala as she led, 4-1, but Waltert—who is ranked no. 284 in the Women’s Tennis Association singles rankings—turned the tables on her Filipina rival and scored six of the next seven games to claim the first set.
The 15-year old Eala would not make the same mistake twice as she dominated the second set and won, 6-3, to send the match into the decider. However, Waltert proved to be the steadier woman in the match as she marched on to a 6-2 third set victory to grab the win and book a ticket in the quarterfinals where she will take on Jana Fett of Croatia.
The win by Waltert was her second in three matches so far against Eala this year. She also beat the Filipina youngster in the W15 Manacor in the second week of March.
In spite of the loss, Eala is coming on strong in the rankings, having notched no. 715 on the WTA ladder earlier in the week. (JNP)
