Alex Eala ousted in quarterfinals of Grenoble tourney

FILIPINA tennis ace Alex Eala saw her astonishing run in the International Tennis Federation (ITF) W25 Grenoble end in the quarterfinals after she was beaten by Polish netter, Maja Chwalinska, in straight sets, 0-6, 4-6, on Friday in France.

The 15-year old got off to a terrible start as she just could not get anything going against the 19-year old Chwalinska, who is ranked 220th in the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) singles rankings. In fact, Eala double-faulted three times in the first set, twice in the first game alone, as Chwalinska won the first set in dominant fashion.

The second set saw Eala put up more of a fight as she broke Chwalinska’s serve to surge ahead, 4-3. However, that would prove to be Eala’s last hurrah as Chwalinska rattled off three straight points to take the set and snatch the win in just one hour and 16 minutes.

In spite of the loss, Eala is expected to gain some more points and move further up in the rankings, thanks to great performances this week, which included a three-set thriller over Romanian netter, Laura-Ioana Paar and then, another three-set victory over the tournament’s seventh-seed, Cristina Bucsa.

After winning her very first pro tournament a few weeks ago in the first leg of the W15 Manacor, Eala has been eliminated in the quarterfinals of her last three competitions. The up-and-coming star, though, has several more chances to win at this level as she is slated to compete in two more $25,000 tournaments and two $60,000, thanks to the ITF’s Junior Exempt Program.

Eala’s next tournament is the W25 Manacor in Spain on March 1. (JNP)
