22 May – Alex Gonzaga recently defended her social media post about her recent trip to Japan, which seemed to have irked some netizens immensely.
As reported on Inquirer, the actress who is on a trip to Japan with her family, recently posted a photo of her with her mother on the streets of Osaka, and wrote, "Ang sabi nga nila: Japan, Japan sagot sa kahirapan!" (which is translated as "Japan, Japan, the answer to poverty").
Riled netizens quickly slammed the actress, saying that she was being disrespectful and tactless towards the overseas Filipino workers in the country.
Gonzaga later responded to the criticisms, saying that she has been hearing that phrase since she was young.
"Most of the time, Filipinos move overseas to have better opportunities. It's how you interpret that phrase, and the joke is [we're pretending] we're moving to Japan [with my mother]," she added.
On the other hand, fans have also defended the actress, with one saying that she wasn't bothered by the line even though she is working in Japan.
